iTunes alternative for managing iPod

Question

iTunes on my PC is just running horribly.  I can't sign into the store because it crashes.  It lags horribly.  So I just want to get another program that can help me manage my iPod classic and my wife's iPod touch.

The one thing I really like about iTunes is that I tell it to manage my music so when I drag something I bought from Google Play or Amazon Music into it iTunes will copy it to my NAS with the proper Artist/Album/Song.mp3 architecture.

Also, I can't use Windows Media Player because, besides not managing an iPod terribly well it won't take my NAS as a library.  (Microsoft, please fix that!)

Lastly, I have Googled alternatives and came up with Media Monkey, Songbird and CopyTrans Manager but I have not used any of them and I was hoping people here had.

Thanks!

I used to use Winamp (and MLiPod plugin) when I had an iPod and it was great. Worth a go!

I would imagine Winamp doesn't copy files to a specified location when media is added?

Edit:  After going to the site I think I'll wait on Winamp until they relaunch it.

No, it uses your media 'in-place'.

No need to wait, snag a copy now (from the forums, they've kept the existing versions available). :)

Well, itunes is slow maybe but it shouldn't be crashing. have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?

Yes.  I've tried everything except reinstalling Windows, which Apple suggested.

I'm not sure Winamp supports syncing with newer iOS devices.

I currently use MediaMonkey, but previously used CopyTransManager.  I'm not aware of any other Windows programmes that support newer iOS devices.

How do you like MediaMonkey?  If I drag files into it will it copy them to a predetermined folder?

Well, I use Syncios for my iPhone

It doesn't state on their website if they support the classic line of iPods, but I think I used it many months ago one time to add a few albums to my iPod 5.5

I only use MediaMonkey for syncing music/podcasts to my iPod Nano (5th gen), although I'm sure it's quite capable at managing a music collection.

Foobar with the iPod plugin.

best option, better then iTunes as well. as a bonus you can run replaygain on everything to make sure that everything plays at the same volume on playback .

I believe the Foobar iPod plugin also requires the Apple Mobile Device Support service/dlls to be available - i.e. iTunes also needs to be installed.

EDIT: Hmm...it seems that Media Monkey does also, although I don't recall installing this in the past...

http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/

Haven't used it in 7 years ? don't use any Apple products ? but it was a lifesaver in 2007 when I wanted to fill my wife's iPod with something to listen to while she was in hospital getting ready to give birth.

Itunes was giving me all kinds of problems, so when Yamipod worked perfectly, I was so pleased, I gave the dev $30.

JRiver's Media Center.

Best $40,= or so I ever spend on software. It's lightning fast, it can play music, videos, show photo's. Catalog the s**t out of everything. Tons of options. Has several layouts to cater your screens, and one of the best audio plugin implementations out there. Can handle a boatload of songs and not even start to crack.

There's even a free (audio only) version based on an older version of the app.

I use the app to connect my iPod ever so often when my Music Library expands into new territories ;-)

cheers,

rob

You haven't really used MediaCenter then.... ;-)

MC is one of the best out there. Free or commercial. Nothing bad about Foobar, but it isn't the same thing really.
