USB Device Not Recognized

Recommended Posts

Guys i am having the biggest headache going and i am hoping one of you can help me out.

For the last few days i am getting an annoying pop-up at the bottom right of my screen 'USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB's connected to this device has malfunctioned'

I have googled said problem and have done everything to try and solve this. I will try and list what i have done so far.

1. Turn off PC take out power reboot.

2. Uninstall Unknown Device Driver

3. Scan for Hardware Changes.

4. Reinstalled Windows

5. Run scans...

It just keeps staying there. Everything on my PC is working.

In Devices i have an Unknown device that is causing the problem.

What else can i do?

I am currently sitting with my head in my hands waiting for this horrible bleeping noise to go away :(

Please help :(

install the chipset drivers from intel/amd.

if that still fails, you have a broken internal USB controller most likely, you may not even have anything connected to this controller hence why you don't notice it. might also be something else on your motherboard that use USB that's broken but it's critical to the operation of the computer.

I was really hoping that it would not be an internal Hardware problem. I only built this rig 2 months ago. Everything works fine apart from this one error :(

also check your hard drive drivers. there's some extra drivers for the HDD and controller that you sometimes have to add in addition to the chipset drivers. The drive will work fine without them but you can get error like this.

Do you have any devices that are plugged in? (peripherals, hubs etc).

I used to have an issue with my Sandybridge based laptop that the hub would fail periodically with that notification. The solution was to turn on the XHCI hand off in the UEFI/BIOS then reinstall the chipset drivers.

All i have plugged in are a mouse and keyboard right now. I did another full install of Win7 64bit formatted all my drives. The unknown device is still there and pops up every now and again. I visited the ASUS forums.. as i have a Maximus Hero VI mb and they recommended clearing the bios (cmos). I have done that and still its there. One thing that puzzles me is that i never had this issue when i first built my machine and turned it on. It was apparent as soon as i installed the OS this time. Before updating anything, But for it to be a hardware problem my board should be telling mew via the led code indicator. If i can not solve this problem tonight i may have to give customer support a call as they are currently closed.

This really is a head scratcher.

I do see an xHCI option in the bios maybe i should give what you say a try.

Try USBDeView it will give you a historical information on all USB devices installed on the system and their state

This is one of the things i have tried. And did not help. Thanks.

Just did what you said even though i have an Haswell CPU and it didnt work. Still an unknown device present. It has not popped up saying malfunction or anything for a while. But it is still there and this happened yesterday and it got me like a true ninja.

Currently the Unknown Device is installed correctly and is working. I can not find out what it represents. (this has previously been the case and has malfunctioned with an error code 45.)

When i uninstall it, it will just come straight back like a disease. My mouse and keyboard are the only 2 usb connection to the pc. I dare not plug anything else in.

check the properties of the USB device in device manager and list the vendor and device id

Done that. all it reads is USB/Unknown

Did you try deleting all devices in the tool?

Yes. When i restart they just come back.

Last time I had this problem, it was the device it self (Creative vision zen:m) and just like you, I thought I had a faulty motherboard, then figured out it was one of my devices connected to the pc.

Does the USB device display same error on another computer? If yes, then your device is damaged. If it works on other computer, then you may have corrupted driver or some windows file corruption.

unfortunately the last i saw this happen it was a faulty USB controller, that required a mainboard replacement (it started as one damaged USB port and eventually none was working; it was popping that message even without any USB connected to it).

you can try to boot your computer without any USB connected and see if it pop up; if not then plugin in the same USB port one device at the time, so you can discard if it is a USB port or device that is causing this. If none of those works then it's the USB controller: RMA the board.

I do not have another way of testing the devices.

Everything works fine. This is what is so confusing.

I am fresh out of ideas. Everything everyone has kindly suggested I have either already done or tried and i am still in the same position.

It had not came up with an error for about 2 hours. Then all of a sudden I go in to AI Suite (motherboard software for ROG hero 6) to use the 4-way optimization tool to get the best out of my computers performance. And before i even have a chance to adjust anything it pops up malfunctioned again. So i uninstalled the device via device manager scanned for hardware changes and the unknown usb device installs normally again.

Its just like i am waiting for it to happen all the time without being able to do anything about it.

unfortunately the last i saw this happen it was a faulty USB controller, that required a mainboard replacement.  :/

I have a feeling that it may be the case. Just weird that my board is not picking up the error.

I would have normally solved issues like these by now. But i have not been able to and that is a sign that it is hardware malfunction.

Out of curiosity this is my first build and still have all the boxes packaging etc (build about 2 months old)...

Is it a case of sending back to manufacturer (asus)? i am guessing i just ring the customer support and take it from there?

Thanks.

yeah, call ASUS and explain the issue and - very important - explain that the issue is still on even after a fresh windows install. They will RMA the board.

but before that please test the USB ports and your USB devices, just in case it's one of them causing the problem.

Mouse and Keyboard are the only things i have plugged in after fresh install. Would you suggest just testing those on all ports on my PC? Or do you mean try all my USB devices webcam and Snowball mic too?

Thanks.

uh no, see my previous post: if the USB error appears and there's USB devices connected, then try to discard if it is a USB device that is causing all the havoc or a USB port; power on your computer without any USB devices and see if the error appears (if you must plugin your keyboard or mouse to login then so be it but then remove it); if it appers without any USB device connected then RMA the board; if it doesn't (and it's likelly that you have to wait for some time) then plugin a USB device, one at the time, in the same USB port, so you can figure out if it's a USB device that causes the problem or a specific port.

anyways, i'm seeing USB controllers going nuts in the latest times, specially on laptops.

It does appear when no usb's are connected i tested this earlier today.

In fact i would go as far to say the error is more apparent when nothing is plugged in at all.

Thank you all for you time. I will update tomorrow in case I find anything out on the phone to them.

Do you have one of those Card readers plugged in ?

Try disconnecting it.

Reinstall your chipset drivers.

Look for a Chipset update on Asus support for your motherboard.

OP said that same issue happened after a fresh Windows installation, so it's unlikely it's a lack of chipset drivers but more likely a faulty USB controller.

Windows install has nothing to do with manufacturer's motherboard Chipset drivers.
