System 76 Ubuntu laptops. alternative to windows laptops?

I was reading up on the extreme version "benobo" series and thought that, if I could purchase one of these, theoretically speaking, should I want to convert it to a windows system, the hardware would probably be easily setup with drivers for say Windows 7. Or I could go alienware conversely.

I would probably have to convert this system to windows for my classes, but when completed, I could re-install ubuntu that came with it.

would you agree with  this assessment? Liberty University online out of lynchburg VA. requires IE for proper usage of the entire online system and services. Heck, even Chrome isn't recommended by Liberty U.

or on the other hand keep this windows laptop and install windows 7 oem and have to laptops. I like options.  liberty U also uses the outlook online app for our email system

WTF? That is wrong in every respect. If they have to use IE, they are stupid as hell. Outlook I can understand.

Those systems are rock solid, I have a few friends that owns them. You get the best CPU than any manufacturer, for the premium they sell it at. You can add pretty much anything to them. I have my eyes on the Kudu myself.

Should be fairly easy to put Windows on it. It's just 100% Ubuntu compatible.

Hey, the school made that decision. I can access 90% of the stuff via 64 bit chrome. Only thing I cannot access are the classes I've taken versus what I have left to take for my AA degree. But I appreciate the comments about this laptop. my thinking was everything looked legit. I'm kind of in a toss up mode. I wouldn't mind having a Windows laptop (this one I'm typing on now) and a linux one for fun and games.

But I sure like those laptops. thanks guys!

Can't you just use VirtualBox? Use Win 7 on top of Ubuntu?

probably. I'd rather go one way or the other but that might work.

Mom is going to Liberty U also, she has a Mac, she uses Parallels to use IE when forced to, so at that level it works good enough

You could use IE Tab in Chrome to emulate IE and avoid most of it's horribleness

You wont regret it. They are sturdy and well specced, and the price is fair. The sturdiness is not Think Pad level, but well above consumer average.

and, even if you're not a Linux advocate, you're helping with this purchase. For this, I thank you.

I wouldn't worry too much about IE for Liberty University.  When I graduated from Liberty in 2008 they were pushing Ubuntu, in fact with the exception of a few programming classes I used Ubuntu exclusively.  Now in 2014 I am a grad student there and I mainly use OS X.

I haven't bothered to log in with an Ubuntu box since I started back up because I've been using my Macbook Pro the whole time, but if it works in OS X using both Chrome and Safari I see no reason why you would have issues with Ubuntu.
