Maxis on the future of Sims: "If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5"

The Sims 4 has been out for less than a week and Maxis has made it clear they?re entirely focused on the success of The Sims 4, before even thinking about the next game. On The Sims official forums, producer Grant Rodiek quelled suggestions for the next Sims game from fans with some definitive statements.

?We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.?

The Sims 4 released only a few days ago; our Steve is going to play it until his ?eyes fall out?. While some passionate fans were giving suggestions to what could be added or changed in the next game, producer Grant Rodiek stepped in to remind them not to get ahead of themselves. ?We're not working on Sims 5. We're not thinking about Sims 5. If Sims 4 isn't successful, there won't be a Sims 5.? said Rodiek.

When later challenged by fans, Rodiek clarified that it?s ?not all or nothing?, but that ?something has to pay for 5?. Seems like how game development usually works to me, but it's strange to think of a world without The Sims.

Is The Sims safe for now, or could this be the end of the iconic life simulator as we know it?

I am sure most claims like this are marketing driven. If they tell the fans it may die they will run out buying copies... Maybe I am too cynical.

I wouldn't be sad if Maxis focused their efforts elsewhere. That said, a lot of people love the series, and if it's isn't successful it's because it's half a game compared to what people already have with The Sims 3.

I heard 4 was less feature complete than 3 which makes it inferior in that aspect.

Regardless Sims is not something I would get unless free.

The main idea is to ship 1st game with bare minimum engine files so that it will just run. The main money comes from expansions which will be more than 10.

Note that it's also an entirely different engine (graphics and logic) this go so they couldn't reuse content.

IMO the game is fantastic.  Yes, it could use more content, but I'll still be playing tomorrow and next week and so on I'm sure.

I still see it as exactly the same engine. But Maxis and EA will like us to think it's entirely new code so that few interactions/objects in the game are justified. I guess 80% of the code is copy pasta.

Just looking at the files alone it looks like they've changed the programming language entirely.  I'm told it has DX11 and possibly Mantle as well, though I haven't seen any official source confirming or denying it.

The Sims 4 uses the GlassBox engine (the same engine that was used in, and developed for, SimCity 2013). Very different from The Sims 3.

Nothing wrong with the Sims 4, except it's a base game. same as Sims 3 and Sims 2 and the Sims. But with much smarter sims and better simulation. house construction is also a lot more advanced than previous games.

Would it be nice if it launched with all the addons from a very old Sims 3 with all it's addons, sure, realistic ? hell no.

Also I have no doubts it's already successful.
