Dell U2412M (2011) or Dell U2414H (2013)?

Recommended Posts

The older (late 2011) U2412M:

1920x1200
300 cd/m2
1x VGA
1x DVI-D
1x DisplayPort
5x USB 2.0
?207

The newer (late 2013) U2414H:

1920x1080
250 cd/m2
2x HDMI
1x DisplayPort
1x Mini DisplayPort
4x USB 3.0
?200

I would like 1920x1200 but I would also like a tiny bezel (the 2013 model) and USB 3.0 ports!

Can't decide!

i'd def. go for the newer model. Dell makes fantastic monitors, but have you considered other brands?

also, why the std HD resolution instead of something higher?

?210 is my limit.

The U2414H.

The reason is very simple:

1920x1080. No need to go higher as media isn't commercially released yet in other formats plus Blu-Ray spec says max is 1920x1080 (unless you are a space freak or a game enthusiast that loves to max out things for no reason other than that your PC can do it)

HDMI. I have a U2312HM and the days/nights I have missed having HDMI. HDMI to DP is simple but DP to HDMI is very expensive. DP is dead basically.

And obviously, even if your board doesn't support it, having USB 3.0 is nice.

BTW, Dell makes awesome monitors. I have been in love with my U2312HM since I got it.

I have been in love with my U2312HM since I got it as well.  I want to run dual, but I wont be getting another one of them because of cost. Maybe Acer?  Not sure who else is good and cheap as well.

I'd go for the 2412M, For me 1920x1200 is so much nicer than 1920x1080, you really do notice the extra height.

I had a Illyama 16:10, then briefly had a 16:9 and went straight back to 16:10 with a U2412M

I believe the very new model from Dell (2415?) is again 16:10.

Dell make great screens.

1920x1200 is nice in Windows, though. Also, I have a CrossFireX setup so the extra few hundreds pixels won't slow me down too much in games.

I don't have 2x HDMI ports on my graphic card but I do have 2x mini DisplayPort so I guess, if I bought the newer screen, I'd have to also purchase 2x mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables?

I presume the older U2412M also has a hard screen like the newer U2414H? I don't want to be able to touch the display and see the "liquid" effect. Having a hard screen makes Apple's Cinema displays look fantastic.

Sometimes DPTOHDMI and/or HDMITODP is confusing to me so Ill explain :)

If I want to connect a Xbox 360, which has a HDMI, to a U2312HM's DisplayPort, the adapter is VERY expensive.

If you wanted to connect a modern console to the monitor, you'd surely just connect it directly to the monitor's HDMI port?

What about the BenQ gw2760HM or HS?

No USB ports though.

No USB ports, not IPS and too big.

Yes but for example the U2412M you listed and the U2312HM do not have HDMI ports. Its something to be careful about in the future because almost nothing has DisplayPorts and almost everything has HDMI.

Looks like I'm getting the 2013 model, then.

The 2014 model is out soon and brings back the 1920x1200 resolution of the 2011 model but I highly doubt it'll be below ?250, so I think I'll still with the ?200 2013 model.
