Minecraft to join Microsoft

Recommended Posts

Well, this is rather surprising: Microsoft is in talks to buy Minecraft's developer, Mojang, according to a few different sources. The Wall Street Journal says that the ever loose-lipped "person familiar with the matter" has noted the deal is valued at over $2 billion, while reps for both Redmond and the Swedish developer remain mum on the subject.

2 billion better spent elsewhere... Minecraft sells on its own, but so far it's been a one trick pony for Mojang.

What Notch has said

edit: And by money spent better elsewhere I mean if someone at MS is writing "blank cheques" for $2 billion think of all the new IP/studios/indie titles or even AAA titles that could come of that.

It's not worth it. they're better off buying several cheaper and better studios for that.

mojang is a one trick pony Minecraft is the only thing they managed to make that sells, I don't even understand why it sells, it's not a very good game in any way, and there are far better minecraft games coming out now and in the following months, Minecrafts reign is over. so that game won't ever make back the money and the "talent" at mojang isn't worth the money, they're apparently not all that talented since they've only been able to make one game so far one cancelled and one unknown entity.

For this money they could have bought up the entire bankruptcy estate after THQ and be much better off.

Hey now, it's Microsoft; they like buying enterprises from the Nordic i guess :)

neither do I. ive had zero interest in that game and probably will have zero interest in it forever. but I guess there'll be a Minecraft 2,3,4,5.... and everyone that buys it is probably going to keep buying it.

I too don't understand when people like different things than I do.  Everyone should like all the same things I do and spend their own money the way I do.  I could never wrap my mind around the fact that if millions of people put down money for a game, then some of them must find it entertaining.

Microsoft if ur gonna waste 2billion why not buy a studio such as Capcom.

For $2billion I'm pretty sure you could buy Capcom and Crytek or come close.

I just don't or can't grasp the $$$ thrown around at things that aren't worth the price tag.

very confused about the sum.   minecraft is not subscription based,   how do they ever expect to make so much money back to MS?    new versions of minecraft ?   or a secret project ?

i mean, original mineraft was clever digital lego, that people liked to tinker with...    but now, there are a who bunch of new crafting games!     i am not certain any revolutionary ideas are left at mojang

Minecraft prints money like crazy and continues to do so on each platform it's released, but even Notch acknowledges he is scared of his own success & will never match it.

Would not be a wise investment for MS.

They're not boing the company for the game, they're buying it for the people workign there and the IP.

of course, none of them are worth half that...

it may print money, but even at the rate it's going now if it keeps selling at the same rate, you're looking at decades to make back this sum.

I'm not suggesting that they would make back the $2 Billion from this deal on sales :P

Are American companies able to buy Japanese companies? I swear I remember reading somewhere that they weren't able to someone correct me if I'm wrong. Microsoft would be the only one with enough cash to buy capcom and buying all the IP's they own would sell plenty of consoles and hopefully bring back a lot of games capcom doesn't seem interested in making but the public wants.

If notch is really being offered 2billion take it and run...

U are correct, I don't believe American companies are allowed to buy Japanese companies. I don't know if that some kind of law, or honor code in Japan.

wonder if Microsoft successfully buy Mojang along with its Minecraft IP,

would Neowin required to pay royalties to Microsoft for the Minecraft patents?

what.... you don't pay patents to run game servers...

Why?

Add a few billion more and they can buy Sony's PS division and burn it to the ground. That will bring a sure success to XBO.

Yes, it was a joke.
