Random double-clicks in WIndows 7

Recommended Posts

One of my users is experiencing a strange issue - he's getting random double-clicks when working.

We've tried removing and reinstalling the driver, and replacing the mouse. Neither corrects the issue. A temporary fix was to swap the mouse buttons.

I've done a full virus scan with Symantec Endpoint Security 12.1.4100 nothing except a few tracking cookies.

Any ideas?

System specs:

Dell Optiplex 7010

i7 304 GHz

8 GB RAM

Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit SP1

Double-click sensitivity set too high in the control panel?

I checked that. It was fine when tested, and he hadn't changed that setting.

Just another "obvious" check, sure that other mouse is actually good?  (Especially since reversing the buttons seems to fix it) I've had that come up in the past, mouse had a bad switch, popped on another mouse with a bad switch and didn't know it, headaches ensued.  Typically the first button's switch wears out much faster than the second button.  It's a stretch but *shrug* get the obvious out of the way.

The replacement was tested, so I know its good.

Does this occur on other user accounts on the same machine? Have you seen this occur in Safe Mode or while booted into recovery mode?

Haven't been able to try other accounts yet, but that's the next step if the replacement mouse doesn't do it.

Its a basic mouse that came with the Dell system.

I haven't heard any additional complaints yet after swapping mice. I'll keep the suggestions in mind and keep you guys posted.

Hello,

You may wish to try using a mouse from a different manufacturer (just to ensure it isn't a software-related issue endemic to the mouse and the computer's current operating environment) and also try using a mouse on a different bus as well, if possible (e.g., switch from USB to PS/2, or vice-versa).

Also, if you have recently updated or changed settings on security software that involves an anti-keylogging component, try temporarily uninstalling that to see if it makes any difference.

Regards,
