Man shot from behind by police, family says

Recommended Posts

To hear prosecutors tell it, Darrien Hunt lunged at officers with a "samurai-type sword" before he was killed.

To hear his family tell it, police shot the 22-year-old several times while he was running away. An independent autopsy proves he was shot from behind, his family's attorney said.

And while there's no consensus about what happened Wednesday morning, the case is already drawing comparisons to the police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

Hunt's mother said she believes race played a role in her son's death.

"They killed my son because he's black," Susan Hunt told CNN affiliate KSL. "No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he's running away."

But the Utah County Attorney's Office said there is "currently no indication that race played any role in the confrontation between Mr. Hunt and the police officer."

"Police officers from the Saratoga Springs Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious individual walking around a local business with a 'samurai-type' sword," Chief Deputy Tim Taylor of the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Another crying racist.  And what cracks me up is the last little bit of the article.....

While some have speculated that race played a role in the shooting deaths of Hunt and Brown, there's one key difference between the two cases: Brown was unarmed when he was shot, and Hunt was reportedly carrying a 3-foot sword around a Panda Express restaurant and other businesses.

"I believe that maybe my son thought, 'Maybe I'll try to get a job at Panda, maybe this sword will impress them,' " Susan Hunt told KSL.

Really?  Carrying a sword to a job interview and thought that would be impressive towards the employer?  People trying way to hard to see racism when there is non or when a single person is just being stupid/made a mistake.  Granted, race plays a factor in some cases but this one, no.

Not good interview planning skills

If,

1) he had been told to drop.the sword and didn't, and/or

2) there was ANYONE in front of or in a quartering position to his side

the cop had all kinds of justification to shoot, regardless of being behind him, because he was a threat to third parties.

Possible suicide by cop.

You are right, its worse than racism.  Its complete supplication to authority.  So did he lunge, did he run at others, or was he just running away from their flat footed asses?  My bet is white people will always believe the first (and make up the second), which is a form of racism. As is the denial that when such transgression do occur, it will occur undoubtedly more to brown people, cause they are scary and stuff.

Its ok to be a gun toting ######, just don't try and carry a sword anywhere.  Is that going to be the new rallying call Doc?  He might have had a concealed so we just shot him, its safer that way.

Because concealed carry laws are VERY often specific to firearms, and in a few places a Taser.

No machetes, swords, axes, flails, fighting stars, nunchucks etc. allowed. In many locales even a knife over 3-5 inches is illegal to carry except when hunting or fishing.

In Michigan I'm limited to carrying a 3 inch blade unless hunting or fishing, but I can carry a .50 Desert Eagle, .500 Magnum revolver or long firearm all day long.

I knew it, before I even clicked on this story I said "i bet the man was black" BOOM I was right, this is a new stereotype being built against black people as it seems to be the story every one is crying, "oh it was cause he is black" get that crap over here as well and its a crime over here to wrongly use that as an excuse. this guy was running around with a sword, police had the right to shoot as did any member of the public with the correct fire arms licenses (i believe) running away or not

Lost all credibility when I read...

...she believes race played a role in her son's death....

It's almost became an excuse now.

There seems to be some confusion over what actually happened but I do agree with pointing out the difference here, he was armed, end of that comparison. Like it or not, I believe the US police force are trained to end permanently if they think the risk is great enough and that's all that happened here. Sure hindsight is a wonderful thing when things turn out more innocent but in the heat of the moment you only have seconds to react. Let's hope some concrete evidence comes out to show that the Police had justification for their actions.
