Stream media from PC to smartphone (android) on LAN

Recommended Posts

So i'm looking for software  to stream music from my PC (where my music is stored) to my phone via Lan. I don't want anything that stores in the cloud, as i'm on a shared connection and wouldn't want to abuse it uploadings gigs of music.

Google consensus seems to be:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.georgie.SoundWireFree&hl=en

Wondering what anyone else here uses ?

Plex. Just tossing it out there as I'm using it for videos anyways, it does music too. Probably not the ideal option but *shrug* it's an option.

What's the difference between plex and PlexPass?

plex is the base product

plex pass just an extra account you can sign your plex server into to stream over the internet

It's an optional, the apps are included, cloud storage, better multi-user support, that sort of stuff. The Plex server is free, has a web interface that can be accessed on your network, but the apps cost you a couple bucks. Well worth it though. (Supports Chromecast too if you're into that.)

Well soundwire has an alternative free version which allows only one connection per client, so i'll consider plex as well.

Yup, as pointed above, need to pay for the app though :p

If anything, install the server and tool around with it with your browser. The interface is quite similar (mainly just bigger), if anything it'll give you a feel for what to expect. If you think it sucks, nuke it, cost you nothing but time.

That's an idea, I'll give it a go after work!

It's worth checking out.. like I said if it's just music you've may have better options, but since I do videos and pictures as well, it's a no brainer for my setup, and works absurdly well. Entire house is covered on every device.

Well, at the moment it's just music, perhaps in the future i'll setup a smarttv (though i'm fundamentally against anything "smart" :P). What other options would I have for music?

+1000 for plex. You can stream your stuff anywhere anytime. Don't bother with plex pass just install the server and try it out. Amazon app store often has the app for free. Roku, and chromcast have free apps. You can access your library from any web browser

I've had some issues with Plex--most notably, if I pause the song or video or whatever, it restarts from the beginning when I try to unpause. It won't let me skip ahead to where I left off, either. SO annoying. Is this a one-off problem anybody has ideas for, or is that just the way it works? I've been looking for alternative options to Plex since this is driving me crazy.

DLNA is an ok option and a lot of devices will support it. rather easy to setup and windows media player will even do it.

but plex is just as easy to setup and once you set it up, you have access to your media from anywhere. no LAN restrictions, no configuring IPs and port forwarding and .....

You just log in and it works. oh did I mention that Plex also does DLNA so you don't have to pay for the app until it goes on sale.
