IOS 8 now live!

No its only 1.1GB for the OS, but it needs the extra space for temp files while it downloads and updates. 5.8GB for the installation environment.

It needs 4.6GB from me.

What phone model are you using? Maybe different sizes of OS depending on the features it will support? I have a 5s

2.5GB for me and it downloaded (From iTunes) in about 10 minutes. Install was quick and easy, even did it over the top of a Jailbreak.

Not an issue so far :)

Be ready to have some space! Needs 5+ GB free to download and install!

If you use iTunes for the update it does not require this amount of free space on your iOS device.  This is to download/extract and update. Once the installation is done it does not continue to consume all that space.

1.92 GB download on iTunes for iPhone 5S 32 GB on ATT. It says it's going to take over 4 hours to download, fantastic. I am not on my desktop for longer than 1-2 hours at a time, so probably not going to happen unless this download picks up.

iPhone 4s 16Gb requires 4.6Gb to install OTA, I just plugged it in and used iTunes, doesn't require the space and is quicker to download too.

I have a feeling that for the 4S, the last usable iOS version is 7.1.2. After using the 8 GM for about a day and a half, I downgraded and the difference is HUGE, both in speed and battery life. I don't know if things will be better after a few updates, but I don't think they'll top 7 for the 4S. And I don't think they want to.

Sticking with iOS 7.1.2 on the 4S is probably smart for now.  However, 7.0 was terribly under-optimized for pretty much all iOS device 4S and prior (my iPad 3 was a stuttering mess with 7.0). 7.1 fixed a lot of battery, performance, and stability issues.

Apple clearly prioritizes the newer devices. I think their motivation for supplying newer iOS versions to 3yo hardware is for developers. With iOS 8 available on 4S, developers may have more incentive to use the updated APIs in their apps because they are only breaking support for iPhone 4 and prior.

Apple also seems to be in a position of damned if they do, damned if they don't when it comes to what new features are supported on each device. If they include too many features on the older device, they have difficulty getting the performance and stability right.  At the same time, they are sharply criticized when they hold back on features on older hardware.

Tried SwiftKey out. The lag for the keyboard to show up in apps was really annoying. Uninstalled.

It's pretty quick on the 5S, what device are you using? It's just an initial release, I hope it gets better with time/updates.

I'm still trying out Swype and SwiftKey and can't decide on either one.

Both are great - I prefer Swiftkey since you have the excellent auto-correct/predictions along with Swype functionality (called Swiftkey Flow)

Installed it on my 5S last night and it runs great.  On iOS 7, there was a slight delay from the point of closing an app to being able to scroll, and that's been reduced in 8, which is nice.  Overall, not a whole lot has changed upfront, which I like.  I don't really care for some of the extra crap that has been added like Podcasts and Tips, but it's easy enough to hide them.
