Google's Doubleclick ad servers exposed millions of computers to malware

Recommended Posts

Last night, researchers at Malwarebytes noticed strange behavior on sites like Last.fm, The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post. Ads on the sites were being unusually aggressive, setting off anti-virus warnings and raising flags in a number of Malwarebytes systems.

They do this on a daily basis on popular websites with a smile, Tricking users into installing adware and other junk on their computers.

Scum of the earth

I block everything from Google's ad services through TPLs, among many other websites / companies / services. Really don't need my browser connecting to some random crap for some random advertising or tracking.

You can do ads, but do them on your server, not some JavaScript ###### that wastes my resources. ###### off off my browser.

Cease that nonsense! Everyone knows that using an Ad blocker is straight up theft.

Somehow I don't feel like that as a Subscriber^2

For me anyway, adblockers have gone beyond the covering the obvious nuisance factor, it's a permanent fixture in the security setup now just because of incidents like this. It happens quite regularly, and since none of them can guarantee safety, I'm not going to leave a potential attack surface hanging out in the breeze.

I personally use ADP, however on sites that I enjoy and visit frequently, I'll purposely unblock them because I know the score with revenue etc.

Unfortunately, there's all too many ads out there that are not ads at all, and simply masquerade as a fake link for a download you're looking for, or look like links to the next page etc.

It's gotten beyond a joke, so for that reason, I'll happily block ads as a matter of course, and unblock them when I feel it's safe to do so.

I've said this for years. I would love to leave ads turned on and help support sites that have them, but it's just to big of security risk.

Hence why I now use adblock in combo with IE's no tracking lists. Ads have gotten too aggressive and annoying in recent years. For sites I read often, I pay to support (like Neowin).

I don't block ads as we all need to pay our way however overly aggressive ads just stop me using sites.

Please don't tell all of us what we need to do. I think grown adults can manage their own systems are they see fit, thank you. I use NoScript in conjunction with ABP and haven't seen an ad in years.

My system. My rules. If free sites want to turn into pay sites, I'd be happy to invest in the few that I really respect. I sure as heck am not going to be guilted into viewing ads. Sorry. :p

It wouldn't be a security risk if they process all ads on the servers' side, but noooooooo, then they won't be able to exploit users.
