Build Help

Recommended Posts

So my brother is turning 21 in 3 days and i want to give him a good birthday present. His Current Build is outdated and he always gets BSODs. Therefore i ask you guys nicely (or not?) to help me make a build for him.

My Current Idea:

Case: NZXT h440

Cooling: Swiftech h220x or Noctua NH D15

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K

MOBO: MSI Z97 GAMING 9 AC, Socket-1150

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400MHz 16GB

Storage: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB

PSU: No Idea

What do you guys think? where can i upgrade/downgrade?

Get the Samsung 850 Pro. Or the Crucial MX100.

Get the Corsair TX650.

No GPU?

What's his older system? And what is your budget?

Oh yeah the GPU. Thinking GTX 980 or 970.

Got it. Noted Samsung 850 Pro over 840. Thanks.

and is 650W enough for this build?

With no SLI, yes, your 650W PSU will be fine.

I don't think that SLI is necessary. Because he currently have the GTX 590. And he wants Shadow play. So i decided to buy a GPU that has that Enabled. I was going to buy the GTX 780Ti but then the 980 got released which outperformed the 780Ti and is way cheaper.

RAM is probably overkill for a strictly gaming PC. 8 gigs @ 1600mhz is plenty. Whatever money you save on the RAM, put towards the GPU.

i don't foresee that staying true much longer (especially once more games start going 64bit). I personally barely make due with 8 gigs anymore (use more rather often now that i have 16)

rambling aside I would say stick with the 16gb if you want to do easy future proofing

the 2400mhz on the other hand IS overkill IMO. the difference is negligible above 1600 and not worth the jump in price

You didn't add how much money you have available for the build because apart of the hardware, what about the OS? Are you going for the Pro version of X64 Windows 8.1?

Money is not an issue, and i'm going with Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate 64bit.

I always laugh when people say "money is not an issue" --

Then why not duplicate a $20,000 build from Digital Storm or Falcon Northwest ?

Because what would i do with a $20.000 build? And i can find a better use for that money than on a computer.

better use for that money ?  you said money isnt an issue -- so usefulness doesnt matter - doesnt matter what one would do with it - if money isnt an issue, you do it because -- well why not ?

Reason for me pointing it out, is "money isnt an issue" isnt realistic, nor helpful
