Higher than normal Data Usage with iOS8?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm noticing higher than normal data usage on my iPhone 5s, ever since I upgraded to iOS8.

I've already shut off all of the normal stuff;

-Background App refresh

-Automatic downloads

-Facebook video auto-play

-Set iTunes match/radio to use WiFi only.

-Turned off location services for mostly everything

I do still have my email set to "push' because i need that for work, but it was setup this way on iOS7.1 too.

I've also reset the statistics on data usage and don't see any specific app or service that's burning through data.

I'm just not sure what the culprit is, or if anyone else is noticing a marked increase in data usage since upgrading.

Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Something iCloud related perhaps? Sounds like it may keep backing a set of files and/or a certain file up for some reason. I would look towards it to see next.

Then if not it, other back up solutions like DropBox or One Drive or Google Drive. I have seen those apps from time to time keep backing up even though they were not supposed to.

Go to Settings > Mobile and then scroll down.

It should give you a list of apps that are on your phone, and how much data they've used in the last period. It may help you narrow it down to an app or two. Unless it's under System Services and then it's a little more difficult to pin down a culprit.

Edit - woops missed that you'd already tried that..ignore me

How long has it been since you reset? Sometimes process will only kick in overnight so you won't notice it straight away.

Well, I've only had the stats reset for this morning (did it when I woke up).  So far, nothing seems to be using a ton of data.  But, like you said, maybe something happens over night when charging, or at specific times during the day.  I guess I need to let in run a full days cycle.

But I'm also wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

I did notice that during the beta releases, but digging into the usage stats I saw that a lot of it was System services and put it down to logs and stuff being sent back to Apple. Since the either beta 1 or 2 it's been fairly normal, with usage going back to what it was.

Just found a thread here with other users seeing similar issues. There are a number of things that people reported ranging from app updates to iCloud. Have a read and see if there's anything that could be affecting you.

Thanks!  I'll give that a read.

iCloud, and maybe lots of apps updating for all the changes?

I initially thought that too, but I have automatic updates shut off and only run them manually under WiFi.  :-/

Well, this has definitely settled down into what I would consider "normal" data usage for me. I used about 100 MB all weekend, which is pretty fair.

Now that I'm back at work, I'll see if this normalcy continues.

Ok, after two days, this is definitely no longer an issue.  I've burned only 70MB. Not sure what caused the initial spike of almost 800MB in the first couple of days after the iOS8 upgrade, but it has settled down significantly.
