Samsung issues statement about the Galaxy Note 4 gap issue

Recommended Posts

Some early Samsung Galaxy Note 4 adopters reported an imperfect construction on their flagship phablets ? a business card fits in the gap between the screen and the metal frame. Now Samsung has come out with an official statement on the matter but it's mostly PR talk.

"The reported issue does not impact the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4. We assure our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality control standards," reads Samsung's statement sent to Trusted Reviews.

So, Samsung is aware of the issue but doesn?t consider it a deviation of its "strict" standards. Not all Galaxy Note 4 units are affected by the issue and the company didn?t say if it will correct the problem in future units.

Pre-orders for Samsung's new flagship phablet are already underway in the States and European markets like the UK and Germany. The Galaxy Note 4 launched earlier than planned in its home country of South Korea.

Galaxy Note 4 screen gap 'a necessary manufacturing feature,' says manual

Issue acknowledged in official manual, gap may 'may expand slightly' over time

As the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launches in South Korea, reports have emerged in the Korean press of an unusual hardware issue affecting some Note 4 units. The story, first broken by local outlet IT Today, says some Korean Note 4s include a gap between the screen and the metal trim large enough to insert a business card. Given that the Note 4 isn't available globally just yet, it's unclear exactly how widespread this issue is ? and isolated build issues with new smartphones aren't exactly uncommon.

Curiously, though, Samsung directly addresses this issue in its manual for the European Galaxy Note 4, which arrived on the company's support site in the past day. Tucked away on page 180 of the document, under the "Troubleshooting" section, is the following ?

A small gap appears around the outside of the device case

  • This gap is a necessary manufacturing feature and some minor rocking or vibration of parts may occur.

  • Over time, friction between parts may cause this gap to expand slightly.

?This suggests the Note 4 screen gap is a characteristic of the device in general, not just a manufacturing aberration affecting early adopters. The second bullet point may give buyers pause, however, as a widening gap between screen and chassis doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the device's build quality. What's more, we've noticed no such issues with the Galaxy Alpha, which uses a very similar metal-banded design.

We'll know more once the Galaxy Note 4 becomes more widely available. In the meantime we've reached out to Samsung for more information on what function the screen gap actually serves, and will update this post with any new details.

So a gap that accumulates dust which then interferes with the proximity sensor is part of the design for the last 3 generations of phones... Ok samsung :/ never ever buying crapsung again...

Their justification for mediocre build quality is just... "oh the gap might get bigger over time..." I guess using plastic and gorilla glass is to hard that only cheap chinese knock offs have managed to NOT have an issue a all (xiaomi, huawei... well not quite cheap).

Sorry Meph, nothing related to you, just fed up with samsungs build quality... and their ludicrous justifications...

Also, i'd say that link that you posted Meph is front page views, though i'm guessing based on click/views, samsung isn't as interesting for teh interwebz.

if its noted even in the manual, doesn't this suggest that its not an issue of quality control, but that their measurements were off for the molds? they probably didn't want to go back and re prototype and re do the molds because it would add a delay,so they said screw it.

I have to +1 this.

Keep in mind, they{ve had this issue since the s2, this means, they been using same fabric, business model/design and just gone with with.

I think this is the one legitimate time we can properly use the dumb phrase "It's a feature".  The sad part is that they actually mean it...

Yeah, you can hold your business card IN your phone without an additional case... man mediocrity at best,  I can't believe a company as big as samsung allows this.

It's funny as the Note 3 had the same issue.

the s3 and s2 have had it... Like I said before, you imagine the heat apple would get if they let an issue for 3 generations slide? Imagine they let the antenna gate issue live until the 6? Apple would be in serious trouble, but apparently, no one cares for samsung, so they don't care at all.

Hmmmm....my OGPro has no need for this"feature" and works fantastic, Guess I'll stick with LG.

I owned two samsung phones s3 and s4, both have the gap... don't even get me started on build quality... never EVER buying samsung phones until they up their ante for their design standards and material quality.... if LG ( g2 and g3)  can have awesome build quality with the SAME MATERIALS... sticking to LG:
