Driver Crashes

Recommended Posts

PLEASE SEE SYSTEM DETAILS IN SIGNATURE

I am running Windows 8.1 and have the latest Nvidia Drivers for my 780TI. I have also experienced this on the last 3 driver versions. (Before this, I do know the card was running fine...so it was not a dead card of anything)

Simply, my games tend to crash, and it normally shows that "your driver has crashed and recovered" default message.

Depending on the game, it will crash instantly, not allowing me to play, or after 20 minutes, or even after 2 hours. It seems if I reboot the system, it will then play fine for longer.

My temps are fine and I have been keeping track of them.

I am thinking I may need to reseat my graphics card, but then, why and how does a card get messed up and need to be reseated?

If that is not the case, any ideas? Anything I am forgetting?

You make sure the game you are playing is up to date with the latest patches?   Is it all games, or just one game?

I bought a video card several years back and it ended up be faulty hardware.  Was a brand new card and was getting BSODs on all my games.  Had to replace the video card.

My friend's alienware laptop had the same issue, but the crash was very spontaneous. It's not limited to games but in combination of other apps and services running in background.

Many things you can try:

  • Use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in safe mode and then reinstall the driver.
  • Reseat the card. Cards might move a bit out of place over time. Reseat the memory modules too, while you're at it.
  • You say it's not overheating, but what are your temperatures, GPU and CPU?
  • Have you made any software changes recently; new antivirus, etc., something that runs in the background?
  • Scan for malware. Try malwarebytes' antimalware; free will suffice.
  • If nothing works, maybe you could reinstall windows, if you've got the time and patience.
  • If no software solution works either, then it could be hardware; maybe PSU going bad or even the card itself. Just because it was working fine before, doesn't mean it'll never go bad. I've seen cards go from fine to bad in a span of a single day.

I had similar issue with a Radeon card.  It kept randomly crashing, but I couldn't update the driver.  It would always error out on Win8.  Tried updating to 8.1, but it failed and would BSoD upon login.

So I installed 8.1 from scratch with newest drivers and everything has been fine since.
