'Racist' Banksy Mural Destroyed

Recommended Posts

A new Banksy mural showing a group of pigeons holding anti-immigration banners has been destroyed following a complaint the work was "racist".

The mural in Clacton-on-Sea - where a by-election is due to take place following the local MP's defection to UKIP - appeared this week.

It showed four pigeons holding signs including "Go Back to Africa", while a more exotic-looking bird looked on.

See, this stuff really annoys me. The entire point of the Banksy was quite damned obviously anti-UKIP and a dig at people who are against immigration, and yet somebody has decided to claim that it's racist simply because they are too stupid to think it through and just go on the assumption that anything that mentions racism must be racist. Thats crazy enough, but the council deciding to agree with this evaluation is a sign of absolute ignorance. That they pander to people who are too stupid to realise the difference between racism and pro-immigration astounds me.

These people need to realize that the sooner they stop playing the race card at every opportunity, the quicker racism will die off.

I agree that people should stop using the race card, including politics, and reverse race card use. It's complicated. But even so, racism will not die off in America. It will diminish, crawl back under it's rock, but it will never die off. America was built on it, and it's part of the DNA. "Diminish, be demoted, subside," but it will never "die off." Ethnicities will die off through interracial relationships before racism will die off.

everything now is racist. ffs, there's probably someone that would find this very post to be racist.

A certain amount of racism is human sociology. The question the degree to which one should let it be an obstacle to their pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness.

You can't make everyone like everyone else. Some old coot down the street doesn't like blacks or jews, so don't walk on his grass and go on with life. If no laws are being broken, move on. If an entire community decides certain behavior is unwelcome, well, that's another case altogether. Racism is real, it's all so abused for attention, for advantage, etc. As are many other things. We're a lot of things, angels is rarely if ever one of them.

And this was not even in America, it was in the UK.  Imagine if that had been here.

Well, the point of that piece went right over their heads...

Indeed. Ironically, the fact that most people can't restrain themselves during discussions about race is why the conversation about racism never seems to happen.

The only people who would be offended by this are the racists themselves (being portrayed as ignorant pigeons).

Commenting on racism in general. That image would have been a relatively minor issue here unless a there was large amounts of money to be made from a lawsuit.

I wonder how long until painting your house white or black or brown will be considered a racist act...... you know it will come to something like that eventually....

Not that I agree with the works of Banksy, graffiti is criminal damage regardless of who you are however what's even worse is that these people refuse to want to talk about immigration issues so just brand it as racism to avoid it. In my opinion there will always be an element of racism in human society and that's actually fine as long as it doesn't turn into something nasty.

97% of the people living in Clacton are white British.  I'd be interested to hear about the immigration issues they face but I'd be willing to bet the bigger problem they face is a lack of education.

Racism is never fine.

Are people who actually want to kick all foreigners out really a big problem in Britain? I can only speak from what I know, but I know people in many countries who want immigration enforcement don't want all foreigners out; they just think there are problems with the process, with enforcement, or with integration. Doesn't stop them from being called racist, though.

So if Bansky's graffiti is meant as satire, it looks like a strawman to me.

But it would be a bit of poetic irony that he's being called a racist.

Even then, wanting to stop foreigners coming in has -never- been about race, it's about resources.  When local resources are already at their limits for the local population, allowing a few thousand more to come in stretches those resources ever thinner, meaning less and less for everyone.

It's perfectly natural, and quite understandable, for that to cause a lot of resentment.  However, the PC brigade morons spin that resentment as racism, and make it impossible for sensible discussions to actually take place.

I completely agree with the last part, but I think that some, not all, some, of the people who oppose immigration are motivated by racism.

There's some, but I think it's a minority.
