Gary Kirkpatrick
I installed Ubuntu 1404 on a HP laptop running W 8.1 hoping to get a dual boot system. I followed the instructions at http://www.everydaylinuxuser.com/2014/05/install-ubuntu-1404-alongside-windows.html.%C2'> I could not get grub to come up, and the computer would boot only into windows. I installed Easy BCD. Then a screen would come up listing W8 and ubuntu plus other options Windows will load from here but ubuntu will not and I get the message "wndows failed to start .... efit/ubuntu/shimx64.efi the application or operating system being loaded." I can load and run Ubuntu just fine if I press F9 at boot. I get the grub menu, I'd prefer not to have to press F9. How might I repair the Easy BCD installation? thanks
simonlang
i don't really get what's your problem because this is very bad to read and very bad structured sorry. i suspect you might have a grub/boot manager issue? is that correct? if so, try to boot into ubuntu (if not possible boot into it via live-ubs stick) and try: grub-update... recently i read TONS of problems from people using one of the newer notebooks with EFI instead of bios and always having problems to boot anything else than the default installed windows. this might be the case with your system as well. try to see if your bios has anything efi/secure boot, legacy boot related and try to disable it (or enable it, whatever is the case of your entry)

Haggis Veteran Posted October 2, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 2, 2014 As above i assume your windows is uefi and ubuntu is now hence it thinks its two different drives follw the guide xrobwx posted and it should work fine
Gary Kirkpatrick
Read through http://askubuntu.com...-uefi-supported So far can not find anything that does the trick. It's pretty complicated. F9 brings up a boot menu so I can make it work. Still working at it, thanks for the replies.
