Looking for a racing game like Carmageddon 2

Carmaggedon 2 is my favourite car racing game.

 

The physics are great for an older game, but what sets it apart is that you can literally drive anywhere in the simulated world.

I've driven to the top of buildings. I've driven over outer boundaries into hidden areas. I've even driven up a ramp, landing on a plane's wing while it was taking off.

After years of playing, I never get tired of it. Always a new experience. And the AI of the other vehicles can really surprise me.

Heck, you can even find a nice spot to sit out a game and the other vehicles will hunt down each other eventually.

I've checked out other racing games in the past, but they always have restrictions like "can't leave the track" or "must race in a certain order" etc.

So, are there any similar games out there (for playing on XP) that I might enjoy?

FlatOut Ultimate Carnage & RIdge Racer Unbounded are about as close as you can get to game that has some nods to the Carmageddon series.

The "reincarnation" of Carmageddon seems to be a long time in the works. Maybe it will never be finished.

I'd be happy if they would just update the code for C2 to include native HiDef and Sound that will work in Windows Vista/7/8 etc.

 

In the meantime, playing Far Cry 1, and stuck at destroying the third communications tower on the islands.

Seems to be very heavily defended, especially by those stupid rocket firing guys in the lookout towers. Can't seem to avoid them.

Been slugging it out now for about two days and still no further ahead. And, of course, you drop back to the last saved point.

Tried pretty much every angle of approach and am getting pummelled to death each and every time!
