Odd News App Activity on Windows 10

Recommended Posts

I got Windows 10 Tech Preview on Day 1, was wondering if this is happening with anyone else. Ever since I first clicked on the News app from the start menu, it opens by itself every few hours. I thought it was odd and looked in the Task Manager and it has used 251 MB of network resources, far more than any other app.

So anyone else having trouble with apps having a mind of their own?

Maybe Bill Gates is just trying to warn me about Ebola...oh well, back to Windows 7 I go. Will be jumping back to 10 when it is officially released. Great OS.

Who would think the news app which, I dunno, kinda has to update frequently would use data!

Don't be a jackass. I know the news app updates a lot (for the live tile)...but I've only viewed the news in it a couple times and only viewed a couple articles, certainly not 250mb worth of data. It's opening itself and sending or receiving large amounts of data. I don't want it counting towards my bandwidth cap so I uninstalled windows 10 and reinstalled 7.

WinRT apps can use a OS process to acquire data every so often while they're unable to do anything else.  It allows very little of system resources to be used for said tasks.

WinRT apps in use as such will remain in memory, but close out if your system actually needs it.

If you don't want them using bandwidth, just uninstall them.

(There are probably also settings in the app, but I just uninstalled it so I can't check.)

I don't mind the data download. I expect a news app to do that.

What I mind is the unexpected opening of the app randomly, and full screen.

I have done a bug report, but this is annoying.

I normally don't mind the data download either. But it's happening out of my control. It might just be downloading news, but it's stuff I'm not even looking at. Until they fix the auto opening issue, I won't be using 10. That and the spy stuff they have in the Tech Preview, not exactly what I wanted. Everything else is great tho.

It's a pity, though, that you let a minor bug like this make you do something so drastic. I uninstalled the news app, and installed News Bento and Flipboard, and I'm happy.

About the spy stuff, like stated elsewhere, the reason for this Preview, is exactly that: to get feedback.

I seriously doubt Microsoft is actually spying on testers. It's FUD.

Boot up your Preview and enjoy! You are missing out on some fun.

Yeah I'm probably just being paranoid. But I can't help but think that everytime I look at porn there will be a group of Microsoft employees gathered around a monitor laughing at all the freaky stuff I may or may not be into. :shifty:

Heh, don't worry about it. For all you know, they may be into even freakier stuff, and laugh about how tame your stuff is.

See this thread for some discussion on the spying stuff.

And welcome to Neowin.
