fusi0n
I've notice two audio ads on the front page of Neowin.. It doesn't happen right away, but after a minute or two.. Is this normal now?
fusi0n
Seriously.. Now it happens in the comments.. I have my ad block turned off on this site, to help generate revenue.. But these kinds of ads, is why people will turn them back on.
Prosidius
I experienced this as well.

Steven P. Administrators Posted October 6, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 6, 2014 It's not normal, and I appreciate it if you can post a firebug report or use the browser dev tools to "inspect the element" when it happens and show me the code so I can report it. Knowing the company name and a screenshot of the ad also helps. I can't simply go to my advertiser and say "an ad with audio is being put on Neowin", there are hundreds of ads, and that doesn't tell them which one they should disable :p Think about it :p b10h4z4rd 1 Share
Dashel
Its these new video ads. The audio 'burps' before it mutes itself and brings the page to a crawl. Its been at least a week now. Seems more an issue of the player and not the ad, why are these allowed to auto-play?
Steven P. Administrators Posted October 8, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 8, 2014 The default behavior is to not autoplay, and as you point out it "burps" then stops.. I have to wonder if it is more to do with your browser extensions/player and I'm also very sorry but that screenshot gives me too little to go on for a report :( Do you know how to use Firebug (or Developer) inspector? Dashel
I'm on IE11, using the built in Flash component (Win8.1). Just tested again, refresh main page - WatchMojo video about middle on the right side starts playing automatically, but there is a delay where it sometimes burps the audio. Same with the Canon ad in the forum index. Every video ad I've seen autoplays. You get a few tabs open and suddenly something is blipping in the background. The more I watch it, it seems the blip actually happens during the transition from one ad to the next. Update - It looks like some ads (like WatchMojo, Woolite) are using an older flash object. (doesn't give the more modern options when you right-click for the Flash menu like the Quicken ad does).
neufuse Veteran Posted October 8, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 8, 2014 I was seeing them too you'd get random stuttering of audio, sometimes I couldn't even figure out what ad it was coming from as all the ad's on the page were static images and then the stuttering audio would go away when I closed the neowin tabs only. Then the default behavior is broken. This needs SERIOUS attention. I have loaded Neowin pages, only to have the computer the sound screaming while I was in another room, no user trigger whatsoever. It seems like they come on after a certain amount of time. Also have notice that just scrolling down the page will often trigger the ad, even though it is located in a non-visible area of the page, and there are no user 'touch' or 'click' events as the scrolling mechanism is being used. As for browser/extension, try IE11 Immersive (No Extensions). (Can't get a cleaner browser experience than this, so there should be no need for additional 'browser' information for trouble shooting.) I suggest you guys that this is a bit more seriously, as I have turn back on tracking protection that blocks these ads for Neowin until it is fixed. Open up Neowin to have sound start screaming from a device while doing other things is not acceptable. Forjo 1 Share

Dashel
How does the auto-playing video issue go unnoticed for so long by staff? Even if the ad is crap, it wouldn't be an issue if that behavior wasn't (still) occurring.
switch6
I noticed a political ad video playing on the main page just now. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted October 9, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 9, 2014 How does the auto-playing video issue go unnoticed for so long by staff? Even if the ad is crap, it wouldn't be an issue if that behavior wasn't (still) occurring. Fill in the blank. I will even give you a hint. You used the word already. If one of the benefits of subscribing is not seeing ads, it is safe to assume that the unpaid _ _ _ _ _ who volunteer their time to moderate the site also do not see ads. With that said, I know some of the _ _ _ _ _ actually choose to not block ads so the site still gets paid, but I am not sure how many. So it is entirely plausible _ _ _ _ _ would have no idea at all what is going on with the ads.

anguilla1980
This is really getting annoying to no end, I can't even use Neowin at work anymore! The stupid video above all of the comments for each story starts audio after only a minute on the page, it's driving me mad! It's been doing it for weeks now but I'm really irritated at this point. I'm using Firefox, always the lastest release channel. You guys know where you place the videos, just fix it please.
neufuse Veteran Posted October 14, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 14, 2014 Ok this is getting bad, I just had THREE audio ad's play simultaneously and I couldn't figure out where they were on the page... but as soon as I closed the front page neowin tab they all stopped at the same time

Its still not working as intended, videos are auto-playing. Fix that, don't play whack a mole with the stupid ads.
Steven P. Administrators Posted October 15, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 15, 2014 I'm happy to report ads that "autoplay" but help me out here by submitting a firebug report, a screenshot and link that it goes to (sometimes a screenshot and link aren't enough, so prefer firebug reports) mentioned this a few times already and there's even a thread on what to do when reporting an ad pinned in this forum. And whoever thinks we test "video box/ads" we don't I have no idea what you mean actually. Ok this is getting bad, I just had THREE audio ad's play simultaneously and I couldn't figure out where they were on the page... but as soon as I closed the front page neowin tab they all stopped at the same time What browser/version any extensions being used that can rule it out? I have had issues with the latest catalyst drivers and flash in the past few days and switched to the browser native one instead of the adobe plugin (in Chrome) and rolled back to an earlier version of video card drivers. Steven P. Administrators Posted October 15, 2014 Administrators Share Posted October 15, 2014 For example, here is a video ad for my region, it is muted by default and doesn't autoplay. This is what should happen. So you can see I want to rule out issues locally before I start disabling all video ads for the sake of a couple of users.
