Bought a lumia, want to go back to android

Recommended Posts

I've been using android since early 2010. Google Nexus, Note 1 and then Note 2. Finally wanted a change and smaller form factor phone. So I went with the lumia 920. It's a good phone overall, but I really miss android and its play store.

So I'm looking into getting a budget android phone. I'm not sure if a Moto G would be sufficient (read it's not that good in performance). Maybe a Nexus 5?

So, go back to Android.  What is the problem?  You had it for 4 years, I can imagine you would get very used to it.  Now, why you miss the store in Android is puzzling, unless you're finding that the apps you got from the Google Play Store don't have equivalents in the Windows Phone world.

Otherwise, I really don't understand these kinds of posts.  It's like the Neowin forums are turning into Facebook or Twitter.  Something popped into my head! I need to post it somewhere.

Change is never easy. I've been using nokia symbian phones for years, so even android feels strange to me.

If android, then I'd say go for a nexus; clean installation and guaranteed, timely updates.

Agreed, the only "good" experience on Android is pure Google, otherwise you get stuck with Touchwiz or Blinkfeed. However, s/he wanted a budget device, the Nexus 5 does NOT count as a budget device...and the lumia 920 is kind of outdated. To OP, do you need our permission to switch to Android?

Why some of you guys think it's a troll post? I was giving a little a bit of history, then a choice between Moto G or Nexus 5. I like how customizable android roms are, and more options at the play store.

And I didn't show ANY hate towards the lumia.... and if you checked my signature you'll notice that my laptop and tablet run win 8, no different from a lumia...imo.

I think the OP is mostly wanting opinions on a budget phone and not permission to switch, lol.

I here the Moto G is actually a pretty decent phone for the money ($200).  The 1st-gen Moto X would be a great choice as well, but the 2nd-gen phone is $500.

I was looking to change mine in a month or so when contract runs out, but don't want to spend $500, if it's even available on Republic Wireless.  I have Sprint now, but pay $90 for that.  Might switch to a family plan when contract runs out IF I can get new customer pricing and get daughter on plan.  Hopefully I can still get the 1st-gen Moto X on RW.

Moto G. For the price, you can't really beat it. Nexus line has great support and good specs if you can afford it.

As for the people questioning the motives of the OP. He's asking for advice on which phone is the best mid range Android at the moment. Many people come back to Android after realising that Windows Phone offers a sub par experience in its apps/store, customisation, features, and usability.

Care to explain? Or is this another Windows Phone troll post?

He just decided to purchase a two year old handset. Question answered!

I wasn't accusing you of troll posting. I was just interested in knowing what you are missing from Android, like if it was a specific app or feature.

Which apps are you missing, I use a Windows Phone and have all the apps I need?

I use whatsapp and telegram frequently, however their windows apps aren't as good as android, specially in sharing photos and videos. HERE Transit is not as good as google maps when it comes for maps and bus times. It always misses and does not give all possible routes and buses. If someone unknown calls you, it will tell which province that number is from, that doesn't happen here. The default music app is not good and the ones on the store are weird. That's what I can think off the top of my head now.

Slightly on topic from an old iOS and now android user.

The level of polish on iOS for whatsapp and telegram is beyond anything in android in windows.

Is it that iOS has more strict guidelines to what is allowed vs android o windows phone?

When I first bought my 1020 I hated it. I wanted to switch back to my iPhone(Had one for four years). But after about a month I started liking it more and more. Only thing I find now is the app store is still lacking. Other than that I love my phone.

Wow, love some of the comments here....

Anyway, what exactly do you need to use the phone for?  The Moto G is a good phone, great reviews.  I used one for a few hours and didnt have any problem.s  Rated one of the best budget smart phones.

Do you have an option of demoing a device and returning it in a certain time frame for a refund?  If so, I would go that route.  For budget Android phones, the Moto series is the best you got ATM.

I think Windows Phone apps can have a lot of polish as well, Microsoft do have guidelines in place but they aren't as strict with them as Apple.

How about a post where someone does not like WP and wants to switch.  you can dislike something and not be a troll. The OP was asking a simple question and does not have to explain the why, just the want.

Whatsapp should get more frequent updates now that Facebook have bought them for $19bn. I haven't played with telegram that much so I can't comment on that but I do agree on HERE Transit, I was standing in the middle of town and HERE Transit couldn't give me ETAs for any buses. I use UK Bus Checker for transit as it seems more reliable.

What issues do you have with the music app, I can't say I've had any major problems with it myself and Nokia Music is a pretty good alternative?

Wow, the comments here. he said he missed the playstore, i'd miss the play store too. For Windows Phone you have to search for apps made by 3rd party develops for services that you use. I once looked for a snapchat app on the windows phone I had. Couldn't find it. Then goggled it . Turns out snapchat doesn't care enough to write one for Windows phone, so someone else did it for them. So yes, there is support for snapchat on Windows phone. But I found myself always searching to find the unofficial apps.

Not trying to troll, that's just been my experience.

Not everyone is the same.. There are a ton of apps that I use for work, that I couldn't get to work on an Windows Phone unless I changed my workflow.. I basically use my phone for everything.. When I travel, I'll just hook my phone up to a monitor and use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, launch VMware View. Done.
