Can someone tell me the reason for updating our controllers? I just found out about this yesterday, and updated my controller but didn't notice anything different.

It was to allow the use of a stereo headset adaptor - see here

The Xbox One is getting another controller update (update: confirmed, plus other new features)

I'm not sure if that is the exact update that you're referring to, but it seems to be to do with the headset audio quality.

They also fixed the dead zones for the thumbsticks in first controller update before titanfall came out

and fixed the ssue with controllers losing connection.

 

though it still happens for me. but it might be the two access points and the two G930 headsets, the WiiU, and I think some of these logitech mice run 2.4 as well.
