Upgrade Surface Pro 3 to 16GB of RAM?

Recommended Posts

I just got a Surface Pro 3 i7/8GB/512GB version for work.

Is it at all possible to upgrade it from 8GB RAM to 16GB of RAM? Are there any companies I can send it off to who can professionally disassemble, upgrade the memory, and correctly reassemble it? Preferably of course an authorized MS repair place so the warranty is not voided!

I ask because for 50% of my work I run Windows 7 Pro in a Hyper-V machine and 16GB of RAM would make a HUGE difference to me for what I run in the Windows 7 environment.

Another alternative, is if the MicroSD slot supports cards fast enough to be used as extra RAM using ReadyBoost? Microsoft's own store doesn't even specifiy that which standard MicroSD the slot actually supports tho, SDHC, SDXC, what?

Thanks!

Alex

IIRC, you can do it yourself. Surface Pro 3 is a laptop replacement. You can easily change the HDD and RAM.

No, the memory is part of the board so can't be swapped out. Also, readyboost isn't to give your system extra ram it is to speed things up in certain situations. Since the system has an SSD drive already, readyboost won't be able to be enabled using any external devices since it won't make any difference.

Well crap, I figured the RAM chips would be soldered but fully integrated like those Samsung chips are, yeah that blows.

Thanks for the info guys!

RAM chips are soldered on the problem is there BGA Type make it next to impossible to remove from the board.

That's what Reflow guns are for....

Replacing them can be a bit trickier, but not impossible.

They don't even make that option?

Memory

64GB or 128GB version with 4GB RAM
256GB or 512GB version with 8GB RAM

So why would anything its a possible configuration even if wasn't soldered to the MB?

Since you are using Hyper-V you may try the dynamic memory allocation, the VM will lower the memory required when not needed. This way you can start more than one VM. I am using it with Linux and it works (with some tweaks).

This is an old thread - I would suggest opening your own thread if you need help with something as it'll probably get more attention :)
