Atlantico
How can anyone live off $9/hr in NY? I wonder if businesses that pay so low salaries are viable in reality. Hey! I have a business idea that works great, only catch is I can't really pay employees a living wage. Now how does anyone make that formula work? Because "living wage" is an idea, not a number? A living wage is like pornography, it's hard to define, you know it when you see it. :)

It is possible to live on a $9/hr wage, however it is the quality of living that is affected. You may not be able to have that nice car you've wanted, or that mobile phone/contract that you so desperately need. Here in the UK, I work on a low wage (not minimum wage, but not far off). My fiance is on a very similar wage to me, so combined we can have two cars, mobile contracts that suit our needs and can make some allowances for luxuries and holidays. Obviosuly it is easier to live on two wages, even if both are low, but it becomes more difficult if one becomes unemployed or there are other dependencies in the household. However I have lived independently, and I know it is difficult to live on a low wage, but it isn't impossible. The luxuries, holidays, contracts, cars, etc, will all be sacrificed in order to live. Simply, if you're on a low wage and you live as if you're on a decent wage, it's only going to end one way... Xahid 1 Share

I guess you couldn't afford good education either, seeing as you didn't recognize the quote I was alluding to or that my question was qualified by two things both of which you promptly ignore; New York and "a living wage", which I did not specifically define for a reason. I did not ask for your definition of it, nor do I find your definition particularly pertinent to my point. If it was readily definable, I would have defined it. It is my fault, I was being far too subtle in my presentation. Sorry about that.
