New build won't post

Recommended Posts

So Ive just built a new computer that won't post at all. The parts involved are a i5 4590, asus h97i-plus, 2x8gbs 1600mhz adata xpc RAM and ASUS GTX 770.

I've completely pulled the mobo from the case and dropped down the ram to one stick and took off the GPU. With just the barebone hardware I see nothing on screen. I wish I had a speaker to see if I'm getting any post codes but I dont.

I'm all out of ideas. I've never had a computer build end up like this and I've built plenty of computers of the last 10 years. This is my first where it's being a bitch.

I hope someone can help!

You do get a power up, fans working, right? Just no display? Try a different LCD? Try an older card that you have?

Watch out for any BIOS/EFI jumpers set to CLEAR, they've tripped me up a few times over the years. The factory must clear CMOS after burn in testing, some get left in the clear position, they won't start :( PC Chips boards used to be bad for that.

Might have shorted it, there isn't much you can do it you don't see anything on the screen. Like was said above are you getting power? Fans spinning up and all?

Sorry should've stated I'm getting power. Cpu fan /cooler are running. Power led on motherboard is in. There is a MEMOK! Button. I press and hold it but the light never lights up...

@Tidosho: didn't think about checking that. Going to check tomorrow. To frustrated to check tonight.

I had an issue where the RAM wouldn't seat all the way without putting some force into it. It would look like it was in there all the way but it wasn't.

^ only time I've had this issue too.

Ill reseat the ram and put some force on it. This mobo has the new hing socket so only one side clips. Ive had better experience with these mobos holding ram better on the initial install then the old motherboards

I had that on a 1155 board, too. Just make sure when you put it in that the hinge side is well nested.

Reseated RAM with more pressure. Nothing. Finally got a speaker and attached it to the mobo. No beeps at all. I took ram out, no memory error beeps. I left ram in no post beep. NO BEEPS AT ALL. So I tried a different PSU, and nothing. Im concluding its a bad motherboard and I have returned it. Got a different one from amazon on its way tomorrow.

I can say out of the 50+ computers i've been in the last 5 years, I've never had a DOA Mobo.

When I have the problem where pc fans work but I get no beep or display on screen, it has always been RAM problem.

Can you try switching RAM to different sockets?

Did you remember to buy a PSU?

LOL funny...

I hope you seat the CPU and the fan properly.  When the power fan does it's things while nothing shows on the monitor, I can think of 3 things.

1) CPU not seated properly

2) GPU did not work or you did not give the power to the GPU or you did not seated the GPU tightly.

3) BIOS reset pin

not seating the RAM correctly might be the problem too on some mobo but usually if that's the case you would hear the error beeps.  So that rule out the RAM problem...

Not POSTing would make me suspect a dead CMOS battery.

But that shouldn't happen on a new motherboard.

it will just POST [w/ dead battery], but with default settings and say the date/time needs to be config'd
