UEA students urged to urinate in shower

University students are being urged to urinate in the shower in a bid to save water.

The Go with the Flow campaign is the brainchild of students Debs Torr and Chris Dobson, from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich.

They want the university's 15,000 students to take their first wee of the day while having their morning shower.

Mr Dobson, 20, said the idea could "save enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 26 times".

The pair want those taking part to pledge their allegiance on Facebook and Twitter and have offered gift vouchers to the first people to join the challenge.

Mr Dobson said: "We've done the maths, and this project stands to have a phenomenal impact.

"With 15,000 students at UEA, over a year we would save enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 26 times over.

"Imagine how big an impact it could have if we could get everyone in East Anglia, or even the UK, to change their morning habits.

"The campaign has been really divisive - people either seem to love it or hate it," added Mr Dobson.

"We're trying to challenge conventional behaviour, to start a debate on a resource that we largely take for granted."

Based on an average flush costing 2p, campaigners say ?7.30 per year, per person, could be saved if people spend their first morning penny in the shower.

Mr Dobson said they had taken advice from a professor and had undertaken online research about potential health risks for people using communal showers.

He said: "As long as the water is flowing there is no hygiene risk as urine is sterile but we would encourage that every person using the same shower consents to the challenge and if not that they don't take part."

Mr Dobson and Ms Torr are representing the UEA in the Npower Future Leaders Challenge to inspire students to come up with an environmental initiative for their campus.

A UEA spokeswoman said the university supported "students in their efforts in these initiatives and encouraged all forms of enterprising, entrepreneurial and employability activity"

I have peed in almost every shower I've been in (university included). It's no biggie (Y)

It'll only be the women that moan like idiots, anyway. They all think they're princesses or something.

Go the whole hog and encourage them to take Navy showers instead. Now that would save a lot of water.

This is how everybody should take their showers! Saves heaps of water and power

I live on a little island with limited fresh water and expensive power. This is how I have been taking my showers for the last 8 years :)

I've actually been doing this my whole life, just never knew that it was called this. :)

I only started doing it a month or two ago, but I'm definitely a convert. Saving water isn't exactly a big deal to my family, as we're fortunate enough to have our water bill capped (partially due to a skin condition I have), but I still make the effort whenever I can.

What a stupid thing to say.

why?   every man i know pees in the shower when they feel like it.   women don't pee standing up, and they are less likely to accept it as normal.

if you run water after and don't pee and the walls, then it is totally fine.

Navy showers are the answer if you are trying to conserve the water.      seriously. only run it to get wet and then to rinse off.   no need to keep it running while you use the soap!

Or.. Or.. You can just pee outside or IN THE TOILET!

no matter where the water ends up it will eventually evaporate and nature will take care of the rest.

This scheme is not in order to "Save water" its just a scheme to reduce the water bill by filtering peoples pee.

The idea is to reduce the amount of flushes.

If everybody who pees in the morning flushes, or the pee in the shower, that's a lot less water spent

Just remember this - "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down."  (as in the toilet)  ;)

I thought it was natural to pee in the shower.  It ends up in the same drain pipe.

The water doesn't MAGICALLY DISAPPEAR. you could flush the entire ocean and there would still be the same of water on earth.

Earth doesn't have to worry about 'Running out of water'.

*fact

Did you know if all the water on earth was in liquid state earth would be a water planet.

(similar to Kepler-22b)

Go one step further. If you can afford it, install one on those instant hot water heaters. They only heat the water being used, not like the conventional ones that heat all day and all night with a thermostat. Couple that with the Navy shower or the pee in the shower routine and your saving big. By the way, I don't pee in the shower, I pizz in the shower.  :D (would not let me put the ss)

But we don't flush salt water down the toilets do we now?

We flush fresh water, the same water that goes to the tap.

We don't have an unlimited fresh water supply.

I know we can turn salt water into fresh water but those installations cost lots of money

We should be careful with our fresh water supply.

The place I work actually use sea water to flush the toilets. They only supply the taps with fresh water

It's stupid for a number of reasons.  Of course women urinate in the shower - almost every woman I've ever discussed this with has been happy to admit that they do.  One of the people behind this campaign is a women.  There was no reason for Elliot to attack women and stereotype them as moaners, princesses, etc. unless he finds it necessary to try and prove his masculinity.
