Second Ebola case confirmed in the U.S.

A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has tested positive for Ebola after a preliminary test, the state's health agency said in a statement.

Confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The employee helped care for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States. Duncan died on Wednesday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, said in a statement Sunday morning.

"We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

If confirmed by the CDC, the health care worker's case would mark the second diagnosis of Ebola ever in the United State.

Globally, the disease has wrought catastrophic consequences.

The World Health Organization estimates more than 8,300 have contracted Ebola during the current outbreak. Of those, more than 4,000 people have died.

Three countries -- Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia -- have been hardest hit.

This nurse should be put in prison if she survives the ebola. She boarded a commercial flight while 1) experiencing fever and 2) being on watch for ebola exposure. Now who knows how many people she could have come in contact with at the airport and on the plane.

If the flight was job related, her supervisors should also be put in prison for approving it.

The whole handling of this has turned into a giant cluster-f. People exposed there should have been quarantined locally before returning to their point of origin. The US military is building 17 treatment facilities now, but they were given the GO order way too late. Won't be ready until late November or December.

I am still not clear as to why this nurse boarded an airplane. I read that all of the nurses who cared for Thomas Eric Duncan were briefed on not doing something like this during the monitoring period. This could be the beginning of something really scary.  :(

JHBrown and Enron, I think you misread the news.  That girl is the nurse who took care of the Black guy who flew to Africa for a vacation and then flew back.  The nurse works at the Texas hospital.  She didn't board any flight.  She got the Ebola from that Black dude that died.

The nurse lives in Texas and worked at that hospital.  Where do you guys get the info that she board a plane and got the Ebola from Africa?

Sorry, to clarify... there are actually two nurses that got Ebola from taking care of the man from Liberia. Both of them likely got it from not following proper infectious disease protocols, but it is the second nurse that boarded a flight after showing symptoms of Ebola (why a nurse of all professions would do this just boggles my mind!). Now I'm hearing someone at the CDC told her it was okay to fly? If this is true, whoever told her that also needs to be fired immediately and prosecuted.

Our entire federal government is a big f'ing waste of the trillions of tax payer dollars we spend on it from the Prez on down. And many people want to give the gov't MORE responsibility and control of our lives! Jesus Christ!

CBS News reporting that nurse Amber Vinson called #CDC BEFORE boarding the plane and was told she was OK to get on the plane with 99.5 temp

? CBSDFW (@CBSDFW) October 15, 2014

Vinson called CDC several times before flying, informed staff she had fever. It allowed her to fly, reports @DrLapook on @CBSEveningNews

From the AP:

Nurses were forced to use medical tape to secure openings in their flimsy garments, worried that their necks and heads were exposed as they cared for a patient with explosive diarrhea and projectile vomiting, said Deborah Burger of National Nurses United.

From the AP:

Director of the CDC: Hey, I've Got a Great New Idea. From Now On, We'll Have a Protocol That Says That High Risk Potential Ebola Cases Will be Banned From Commercial Air Travel.

Although 99.5F or 37.5C is a normal body temp, it is right on the line, it seems perhaps they should have erred on the side of caution?

Having said all of this, Ebola is dangerous and scary but I am not going to run out and buy a gas mask and a lifetime's supply of Purell. The flu is a far more potent killer than Ebola.

Ebola is more potent (70% mortality), but the flu is obviously much more common.

True. potent was probably the wrong word. Death rate annually from the flu is much greater than Ebola since its discovery is what I should have said.

Had travel been restricted from any town, city, area that has an outbreak we would not be having this conversation at all.

The mortality rate of Ebola in western countries will be significantly lower than that of West Africa, due to vast differences in the quality of treatment. The health systems in the affected countries are at or near the point of collapse, which is greatly impeding containment.

Ebola is a serious virus but statistically it poses much less danger to people than driving, having a shower, going for a swim, etc. The real travesty is that humanity has known about Ebola for decades yet our capitalist society has prioritised treatment for erectile dysfunction over saving lives. This is just another reminder that capitalism kills.

Perhaps, more accurately, misused capitalism kills. I'm sure capitalism has also fueled innovation to cure or treat other illnesses that would have otherwise never have been even bothered with if the State had to decide whether or not to research them.

But that is neither here nor there, the West shouldn't panic about isolated cases now, we should worry about treating the people that are suffering so it doesn't spread to many more people. Whether they be in Africa, China, Australia or Pago Pago.
