Win 8 RTM Core OEM:DM HELP!

Recommended Posts

So I had to replace a client's laptop's Hard drive with a new one. He claim it came with a 8.1 OS So thats the one i installed. When looking up his key and then realizing it didnt activated. I found out it was for Win 8 RTM Core OEM:DM. How would I go about getting the ISO for this? Of course I have to remove 8,1 and go back to 8 in order to activate and then upgrade to 8.1 I'm at lost with what to do...

You can try at the website of the manufacturer (DM) for an ISO, if they have any login account or alike.

If not there, just install with a regular Win8 ISO and use the key on the laptop, this should work. Even activation.

After that, run all the updates ;-P

And maybe make a ghost image for him/her, just in case....

There's a lot of info to be found with Google <Win 8 RTM Core OEM:DM> ;-)

Hope it helps!

rob

edit: a lot of new systems have the serial embedded in ROM as well, so that any ISO/DVD can reinstall Windows and automagically be activated.

Get into PC might be of some help. I just got Windows 8 core.

I downloaded both Windows 8.1  it asks me for my key.  My OEM key doesn't work, so I have to use the generic key.

I downloaded Windows 8 core, and it skipped the key request and went directly to the next screen so I assume it was getting the key from the bios.

I've been trying to find a decent copy to use to do a fresh install, rather than spending money to buy a whole new windows 8.1.

Where exactly do I find that at with my copies?

I have two copies of 8.1 and one copy of 8 core now.

First windows 8.1 asks for the key,  other windows 8.1 has VLK in the name and it doesn't ask for a key,  and the 8.0 grabs my key to use automatically I believe.

I don't want to hijack OP's topic, so mine is here.

I'm not sure where to dl just OEM images but if you go to thepiratebay the new thing is AIO (all in one) ISOs with all editions (including OEM versions of the editions)

just used that myself to switch my laptop to a SSD & start on a fresh copy of Windows

the torrents for these AIO images don't include keys/keygens/activators ect so they're completely safe/legal to download

I'd post a link for you but I'm at work right now & don't have access to thepiratebay

I feel your pain the WIndows 8.1 install is cluster ######.

I mean it's a FREEEEE upgrade, but the downloader for the ISO does not like Windows 8 upgrades just non upgrades. I agree with you there SHOULD be a DIRECT link for for the ISO, its stupid they don't provide it. So your only choice Microsoft has left you to obtain a full version, is to Google that number.

Here is what you need to do, use this just to get it installed. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx Make sure you choose regular 8.1 and not pro. Then use http://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-retrieve-windows-8-oem-product-key-from-bios/ to find the key. You can then use the key found to activate Windows. Once its all done and apps installed, I highly recommend you create a refresh/reset image found here. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824894.aspx

you shouldn't need it. if you already have 8.1 core installed then you should just need to change the key to the one you pulled.

to change the key just to the "Control panel > System" then scroll down and click activate. it will give you the option to change key

One last thing to note, once you get everything installed but before you create the image you want to make sure you have good drivers for the system. I know there is a known issue with Broadcom wireless cards where they do not connect to enterprise networks using the 8.1 drivers. You may have to revert to an 8.0 driver just so those devices will connect to enterprise wireless networks.

So I could technically use the 8.1 OEM image,  use the generic key,  install it and change it to mine? or since mine is a 8 core license, i'd just have to use the 8 OEM and install the 8.1 update, right?

Just a note, the first link only shows them for Pro editions, no core.

Technically there is no OEM image unless this is something highly customized by an OEM. Most OEM disk are just identical to retail disk. Its the product key that determines what license you get. So the media from an OEM could take a retail key and vice versa. From a licensing perspective you only supposed to use OEM media with an OEM key but I wont tell if you wont tell. :) The whole OEM vs Retail thing just as another layer of confusion that does not need to be there, when the install.wim files are identical unless the OEM modifies it some how. In most cases they don't or the modification is very minor at best. Its been this way since Windows Vista.
