New Video Card

Recommended Posts

I currently have an ATI 7850 in my desktop. I have 2x Samsung Syncmaster S23B550 LEDs (HDMI only)

I currently have HDMI to DP adapters that I use. So I can use either DP or HDMI.

System in my sig. I'm looking for an NVIDIA alternative to my ATI/AMD card. Not something a ton better, but similar. I looked on benchmarks, a 650Ti or 660 looks fairly close.

Price is not an issue, but please don't push it.

I'm not sure I understand the purpose, why would you replace your card with a very similar one?

The GTX 660 seems very overpriced (~200$) for what it is compared to new cards on the market. The GTX 750 Ti is a far better deal. The GTX 650 Ti (the plain "Ti") is just not a very powerful card nowadays so although it seems reasonably priced I don't see how I could recommend it given what you currently have.

So, yeah, in that price range the only really good deal on NVIDIA's side is the GTX 750 Ti (get the 2GB version if possible).

So say I go for a 750Ti. What type/manufacturer would you pick? I only ever bought ATI/AMD cards in the past, so I normally go with XFX.

He is running Linux that might be why. I think nVidia linux drivers are better.

Perhaps the only relevant factors in your case are price and output ports, any mainstream brand (EVGA, Gigabyte, ASUS, Powercolor, Zotac, PNY, etc.) should be good. Don't pay overprice for a fancy cooler or a factory overclock (although ofc check out user reviews before buying). These cards are very low-power so the cooler isn't an issue. I have some EVGAs at work and I have no complaints about them, if that's of any help.

Nvidia 970 is cheap ... if you can find one.

Man I would love to recommend ATI as I worry they will go under but the newest series of nvidia cards are soo cheap for what you get.

The 750ti is weaker than the 660, whats the point of that?

When I briefly surveyed prices yesterday I saw the 660 at 200$ which just isn't a good price for that kind of performance. But if you could find it for little over a 750 Ti it would be a decent choice of course. It would actually be a small upgrade over the HD 7850 whereas the GTX 750 Ti would be a small downgrade.

It's not THAT much weaker, even comparing the 1 GB GTX750 Ti to the GTX 660 (which is only available in a 2 GB configuration).  However, the GTX 750 Ti is also available in a 2 GB configuration (identical to the GTX 660).  Yes, the memory bus is half that of the GTX 660 - however, the on-die cache with all versions of Maxwell - starting with that very same GTX 750 series - does indeed make up for it.  Further, the GTX 750 Ti is always under $200USD - even on eBay.  How much is even a gently-used GTX 660 - if you can find one?

Finally, a GTX 750 Ti is decidedly easier on the electric bill than any GTX 660.

Note that even the GTX 750 TI is priced a bit high for its relative performance, in that segment you get better deals on the AMD side. But apparently the point is to switch to NVIDIA for some reason...

At this point I'd go with a 760 or better.  970 is fantastic if you can afford it, but it is $.

I wouldn't want to switch off AMD right now myself (with Mantle getting finished up and so on) but whatever floats your boat.  I was looking for a new vidcard myself, but from my 660 I'd have to spend too much for a proper upgrade so I decided to wait for the 370X/380X rumored.
