I can't play MKVs on my Xbox One

Recommended Posts

On my Xbox one, the only media player is "media player preview". I can browse to my NAS and it even shows art for all my movies but if I try to play one, it says can't play, the item is encoded in a format that's not supported. Does this mean my system has not gotten the October update yet? I checked in preferences and there are no available updates.

My guess is that you probably only need to install the codec for it.  Windows Media Player is very fuzzy with the other proprietary third-party codec.  I think, if I am correct, you just download the codec and use that "media player preview" and it should play the KMV fine.  I do not know much about Xbox but it's possible on PC tho.  Might be the same thing.  Maybe someone with the Xbox knowledge would guide you the correct way or give the right answer.  Mine is just a guess. :)

The Xbox One can play MKV perfectly from media player preview, however currently it won't play the file if the sound is encoded in DD5 which most MKVs are in my experience, so all you need to do is demux the sound format and change it to aac or ac3 and it will play fine, there is plenty of software out there that can easily do this.

Check out vcfans post on which software to use and clear instructions.

I ripped all my blu ray's with HD audio. Maybe that's why they won't play?

If the audio isn't aac or ac3 then that is the reason they won't play as DTS isn't supported yet.

And this unfortunately is why I still have my PS3 hooked up. As soon as the One supports DTS I will make the switch to using it.

I have an HTPC that uses XBMC for my media. I just thought it would be cool to have the functionality to play that media right from the one. My guess is that it will probably never handle TrueHD and DTS Master HD.

The November update should allow MKV formats.

MKV is the container, I don't think Microsoft has or ever will have native DTS decoding capabilities on any platform (only bitstream/passthrough to a capable receiver).

Hey guys, lets make an entertainment console that cannot play audio encoded in one of the most common formats.

DTS isn't that common a codec unless you're dealing with rips, the most common codecs you'll come across are H.264 and AAC.
