What household appliances use CO?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently redecorating my home and was considering replacing my seperate smoke and CO alarms with some of the combined units I have seen are available. This got me thinking, what appliances actually use CO? I'm UK based if that makes any difference.

Thanks

nothing really uses CO, its a deadly biproduct of combustion that if accumulated in a closed off space will poison you

There are a variety of sources of carbon monoxide poisoning, which include:

  • The improper or incomplete burning of natural gas or carbon-based fuels such as propane, gasoline, kerosene, wood, coal, and charcoal.
  • Un-vented or improperly vented heaters and furnaces, which lead to an increase in carbon monoxide poisoning cases during the winter months.
  • Auto exhausts
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Faulty chimneys or fireplaces
  • Faulty fuel burning gadgets such as space heaters and gasoline engines
  • Gas appliances and heaters in small and enclosed spaces
  • Faulty central heating systems
  • Blockages that can cause improper ventilation in enclosed spaces where fuel is burned (e.g. kitchens, lounges with chimney blockage etc.)

As in carbon monoxide?

(I may have misunderstood)

It's a 'gas' (most of the time, odourless) imagine running a car engine in your garage, confined, although you can smell the fumes, the carbon monoxide gas will make you pass out, and eventually kill.

I'm unaware of any appliances that 'use' it, some older central heating systems and some portable calor gas heaters were terrible for CO emissions, but I haven't seen any in use for many years now..

I cannot say which is better, but as a personal choice, I had both smoke and CO detectors fitted as separate units by my local fire department when they were giving those away (ten year battery models)
