usb drive doesn't show as removable

Recommended Posts

weird problem...

running windows 8 on a late 2013 mbp. I have a SanDisk 64GB usb 3 flash drive plugged in.

for some reason, the drive shows up as a regular drive with no option to eject it. It automatically gets picked up as "local disk (D)".

it works fine and I can just unplug it (no corruptions so far). But I have software that only works if it detects that it's on a usb removable drive....

how do I make the usb removable show up as a usb removable and not a disk.

Hi capr,

I have a SanDisk 16GB USB3 flash drive and it also shows up as a local disk. Also, Crystal Disk Info is reporting it as an SSD. Maybe that's why they are so fast. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have a clue as to how to make it look like a removable drive if it is truly a mini SSD.

yea it's extremely fast! large file write speed was 180MB/S as reported by windows 8. average was probably 150. Comparatively my corsair usb drive doesn't go above 80... It's interesting issue.

This is normal for newer flash drives that conform to Windows 8's new certification standards.

All my Sandisks do the same, both USB2 and USB3.

I have a 64gb USB 3.0 sandisk and it shows up in Windows 8.1 as a removable disk.  Only a few months old.  I do always format my drives when I get them to get rid of the OEM software since i never use it.

Came upon this explanation....

Since you are using Windows 8+, my guess is that your SanDisk Extreme is enumerated as an UASP device rather than a regular USB Mass Storage device. Unfortunately, it looks like SanDisk are putting many different versions of their USB 3.0 Extreme devices out there (some with the removable bit enabled, some disabled, some without UASP, and apparently some with) and of course, they don't bother telling anyone what they may get or offer a tool that allow you to change these properties, so users are left in the dark.

I have a 128GB USB3 and a 32GB USB2 Sandisk, and both show as Local Disks.

This implies that Sandisk is changing it back.  So there will be some overlap.

Ah, ok.  Thanks for the info.  I must be lucky since I dont have this problem on any of my sandisks.
