PC Upgrade - Limited budget

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

So, I am looking to upgrade next month on a very limited budget - somewhere between ?130-?170.

I don't keep up with what's good and what's not with regards to processors etc so thought I would ask here.

I have looked on pcpartspicker and chosen the following aas a starting point:

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 370K 4.2GHz Dual-Core Processor  (?38.67 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS5X Performa CPU Cooler  (?12.87 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI A78M-E45 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  (?37.00 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Crucial 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  (?29.07 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GT 610 2GB Video Card  (?35.29 @ Amazon UK)
Total: ?152.90
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Computer mainly used for web, youtube/skygo/netflix and some gaming - not the latest games, as I don't buy new, I always wait until they are in the sales.

So, any thoughts on what needs to be changed?

I don't need anything else as I have HD's, case etc.

For the same price you'd get way better CPU and GPU performance with an A10 5800K and no discrete video card.

Or a A8-6600K since it is newer a wee bit cheaper, but it does have 1/3 fewer GPU cores. There's a promotion on certain APUs like the 6600K, but I'm not sure if that covers the UK or if the prices are adjusted yet.

So, with that cpu, I have:

CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS5X Performa CPU Cooler  (?12.87 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI A78M-E45 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  (?37.00 @ Amazon UK)

Single-channel RAM will be terrible for the iGPU, if possible go for 2x4GB or at least 2x2GB (do they still make those?), make sure you're running them in dual-channel configuration and enable their specific profile in the BIOS (otherwise they default to very low speeds). If you're going to game at all on this it'll make a huge difference. RAM speed matters as well. Of course don't go for extreme speed RAM kits as you'll go overbudget and might as well get a good discrete video card at that point.

AMD APUs got price cut, so you should look after the cut prices: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8637/amd-apu-price-cuts-and-bundles-october-2014

It will be after the middle of November that I will be looking to buy, so any price cuts should have been made :D

Thanks for the input guys.  I shall check back in here when it is time to buy, as things might have changed.
