Choosing my first SSD

Recommended Posts

It's probably fair to say that regardless of brand or overly complicated techie stuff, any SSD you buy is going to serve you rather well.

This is more bang for your buck.

Faster, longer MTBF by 50%, lower power usage (irrelevant for desktop), more than double the capacity.

I have bought ~50 SSDs (in a variety of brands) since 2011 and I am surprised there are so few recommendations here for Intel. Their prices are more competitive than they used to be and their 5 year warranties are simply the best.  I have purchased ~15 of them over the years and have only had to warranty service one of them.  The two in my kids gaming rigs have been going strong for 3 years now.  Of course Crucial & Samsung are good too...

I agree with you. After using a X-25 for a few years, then going to the 520 series in a raid-0, I love my Intel drives. I'm using my 520's as my Windows boot drive and my X-25 for my Ubuntu and OSX partitions. Never a hiccup and the warranty hasn't been used. They seem really reliable to me.

It depends, the first Intel SSDs with their own controllers were pretty good, then things went a bit downhill when they started using third-party controllers on some models. Samsung SSDs sounded a little crazy with the dual processor thing but strangely they've been pretty damn reliable.

BTW Oh Gawd, I hope that shameless router-like revision thing that Kingston did won't become popular in the market.

Thanks for all the input. I wish I had more money to spend because I would get a Samsung. I am just going to go with my first choice (Patriot). For those who say they have never heard for Patriot, go look at RAM and flash drives. I have had a few Patriot products and haven't had any problems with them. But, if I have any problems with this drive I guess I will be one of the firsts to report back with my findings, and I don't mind having to tell a sales person that I want to swap the drive with another brand.

Again. Thanks for all the input.

(mods can mark as solved if you would like)

I love it when people say "Oh man, that SSD sucks, this one blows it away in this benchmark !"  - its like " oh man, only an idiot would recommend that thermal paste - this other one is soooo much better !"

In reality - no discernible difference

I realize these claims werent done in this thread - but arguing between 2 or 3 different SSD where the specs are really close -- kinda silly.

Buy one, and move on - it doesnt matter.

FWIW - I just bought the 120GB Blaze for my laptop -- no different than the Sandisk Extreme in my desktop, the old Samsung 830 Pro, Samsung Evo, Vertex 4 I have owned.  They are all fast and all awesome compared to HDD performance.

Move Along Folks, nothing to see here... move along.

Patriot is a one of the most reliable brands overall, I wish they sold their USB pendrives here. But as I wrote before always check the reviews on Amazon/Newegg before purchasing any specific model, you never know what you may end up with.
