Elliot B.
I have: Asus Maximus V Extreme motherboard Intel Core i5-3750K CPU Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO cooler About 50% of the time that I turn my PC on, I get "CPU fan error". If I hit the Restart button on my case, the message generally doesn't appear and my boot is normal. If it does re-appear, I just hit the case's Restart button again and it's fine. I've not had to do it three times yet. My temperatures (according to SpeedFan) are fine. I've had the three components for 6-12, it only started happening a month ago. Any ideas? +Zlip792 MVC Posted October 28, 2014 MVC Share Posted October 28, 2014 - Are your fans PWM enabled or installed with three pins or four pins? - Installed on near motherboard pin connector? As mentioned in asus rog forum, its seems like known issue: Workaround # 1: Go to UEFI (or BIOS) and Disable CPU fan monitoring from fan monitoring. Source: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?22488-Asus-Maximus-V-Formula-ThunderFX-Board-Wont-Boot-CPU-Fan-Error-Code-A2 Workaround # 2: If you don't want to disable completely it then go to Fan Speed Control and set minimum fan speed to 300. I had this issue a few weeks ago when the weather was getting colder. When I first turned my computer on it said CPU Fan Error and when I checked it was because the CPU RPM was below the RPM warning in the BIOS, due to my house being colder. So check in your BIOS to see if your CPU fan is below the warning threshold. :)
Argi
I have the exact same symptoms as the OP (different Asus motherboard, though). I can hear the fan running and hitting restart makes it boot fine. Minor annoyance but I'll give those ideas a try when I get home.
