capr
how did apple work out the affordability of this product??? the nicer 4k monitors are in the 2k range. apple is giving us a gorgeous 5k display (I saw it in the store yesterday) and a computer for the same price... the components by themselves come out for well over 1k so how is apple able to afford putting such a nice screen in the package as well?? I wouldn't consider buying one with a single M290x but still, this is impressive? what am i missing?

Anibal P
Apple uses cheaper laptop parts and bulk, and yet still fairly overpriced for what you get, not sure how you see them as affordable Draconian Guppy 1 Share

You're getting an amazing 5k monitor and a computer behind it for a bit more than what "4k-same-size-monitors" are going for.

Yea, Dell is selling the same 5k panel for $2500 and that's just for the monitor.

Brian M. Veteran Posted October 28, 2014 Veteran Share Posted October 28, 2014 The retina iMac is crazily cheap for what you get IMO. I think it's probably down to contract size on the display. Most 4k display manufacturers sell very few monitors, and normally to professionals only. Apple is likely going to shift these iMacs in high quantities - and considering the small price difference between the high end 27" iMac and the retina (?240 if you include the fusion drive that comes as standard on that model) - I think a lot of non-pros will opt for it too. I've popped opened numerous laptops as well as iMacs and in some cases the laptops were using generic brand components. I don't believe Apple is using lower binned hardware in the iMacs for pricing purposes. +virtorio 1 Share

Apple don't make display panels. They get from companies like Samsung or LG.
