Auto hiding comments on the homepage?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed comments on the news articles are starting to be hidden. Also, if there is a notification for a reply left on a hidden comment, the notification link can't display it, and instead I'm dropped off at the very top of the article. Is this something that was planned?

The whole thing's quite buggy.  When comments are sorted by oldest first the first comments are hidden rather than the last.  Unhiding comments also results in duplicate threads.

I don't see the point of all the changes that have been made to the front page.  It's just getting harder and harder to use for no appreciable gain.

If I had to guess, you're being linked to a comment that no longer exists (i.e. we've hidden it.)

With that in mind, it makes sense that the coding will kick you to the top of the article.

I can't speak from a coding point of view, but it makes sense that if you're being notified of a response that no longer exists, it makes more sense to at least take you to the article rather than just take you to a 404 page.

Yes, It happens here too.

Sort by newest seems to be fine though.

I personally am not liking having to click view more comments...view more comments...view more comments... it gets rather annoying.

Should have all the comments automatically expand when you're clicking on a reply notification -- have to scroll up to have it show more comments then scroll back down to find where I was to begin with, fairly jarring.

PITA.  You click on the notification and you dont get taken to the post either.  Plus, just makes viewing comments a pain and my preferences to display newer postings first, are not sticking.

I had to click the button twice to see all comments earlier today.  Each time I clicked it a few more comments were unhidden.  As mentioned previously, these were the first comments when sorted by oldest first.

Apart from being an unnecessary waste of time, this "feature" just isn't working.  Why not get rid of it and concentrate on fixing the other problems with the front page.

ya just had this issue, thought I had my post deleted, until I noticed I had to click show more comments. This is dumb. Just let us see all the comments all at once. Thanks!

For me, it wasn't a comment that was deleted. It was just a comment that appeared below the "view more comments" button.

So it's a bit janky still and needs fixing.

Yeah, when I read the thread last night I hadn't noticed anything. Coming back to it today and going through the news articles I saw the problem that was being discussed here. My bad, guys!

No problem. I don't think I explained it too well to begin with. :P

We've been tweaking the comments code because in articles with a lot of comments it caused safari/iOS to crash, we thought "load more" was the solution but as it turns out we didn't like it so much.

Now what happens is, the article loads and comments only load when you scroll there. ALL comments load in the preferred order (oldest first, or newest first). This has just been pushed live, so you can have a play with it.

This has also been tested on Android, iOS and Windows Phone, and shown that delayed loading of comments works there too (including sort preference).

It's still very buggy.  For instance, if you click on the comment link on the front page (to jump straight to the comments) you can't see any comments.  You have to scroll up and then down for the comments to load.

If this is only a problem in Safari, couldn't you limit the "solution" to Safari users only so the rest of us can have a comments section that just works?
