HP replaced motherboard...can't activate windows 8.1 pro.

Recommended Posts

I am thinking I have to send back my computer again.

I had a dead motherboard and sent my computer to HP and now my windows 8.1 pro will not activate. After endless calling Microsoft was telling me that the key in the bios is for a windows 8 computer and not a windows 8.1. pro version that I paid for. Is it possible for HP to fix this without having to send it back in for a motherboard replacement? I called HP and explained the situation to the tech support people and they just elevated it to level 2 tech support and I am still waiting to hear back from them... SO FRUSTRATED!

more details are needed: the computer had Windows 8 installed previously? if yes then HP is only responsible for recovering the key in the UEFI or providing a new one into the new mainboard, but it will be a Windows 8 key, not a 8.1.

How did you bought the 8.1 Pro?

Sorry.. We purchased the computer it was Windows 8.1 pro that it came with and when I sent it in for repair they gave me a windows 8 motherboard according to Microsoft.

So then how will we ever be able to upgrade the computer to windows 10 or upgrade the software at all if these keys are forced into the motherboard with no way to change it without replacing the motherboard?

No  need to send it back to them..

You can call Microsoft for key replacement and you tell them what's going on...

You give them the code that is on your activation screen and they give you alternative code based on the activation key on your screen.
