Samsung announces metal-bodied Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 selfie phones

Samsung confirmed some previous rumors today by announcing two new handsets. The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 are brand new devices featuring the company’s recent focus on metal design and aimed at young consumers.

The new affordable handsets have been rumored for quite a while now and we even got the see the A5 a short time ago. Lots of industry watchers have speculated that Samsung would be launching mid and low-end versions of its aluminium-bodied flagship, the Galaxy Alpha.

Samsung Galaxy A3

The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 are supposedly aimed at young people with an emphasis on social networking and selfies. The phones themselves are very thin, the thinnest Samsung devices to date, and the company has jumped on the bandwagon by adding capable front-facing cameras to its devices and marketing them to millennials as “selfie phones”.

  • 1.2 GHz quad-Core CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 5” HD Super AMOLED screen
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 13Mpx rear camera, 5 Mpx front-facing
  • 16GB storage + MicroSD support
  • 2,300 mAh battery

Galaxy A3

  • 6.9 mm thickness
  • 1.2 GHz quad-Core CPU
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 4.5” qHD Super AMOLED screen
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • ​8 Mpx rear camera, 5 Mpx front
  • 16GB storage + MicroSD support
  • 1,900 mAh battery

Both handsets will be available in “select markets” starting next month, with China being included on that list. There’s no word on pricing just yet.
