How does Neowin feel about Chinese tech products?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I write news for Neowin and if you're not familiar with the content I cover: I have a personal interest in Chinese smartphones, wearables and general tech. Not strictly because its Chinese, but because its usually pushing the barriers and doing a lot of fancy stuff months before companies like Samsung, Sony, Apple or Motorola. To add to that, they are also usually a lot cheaper than their counterparts in the US or Japan. The only real issue with Chinese tech is the support-- even companies like OnePlus who've tried extremely hard to cater to the rest of the world do not provide the level of support that is expected or provided by companies like Apple and Samsung.

Anyway, I've reached out to a few manufacturers/distributors/retailers within China and I've gotten some positive responses in regards to getting Chinese tech to review for Neowin. I'm just wondering if this is something that you, the community, would be interested in. It won't be average tech but something unique, either as a device (such as a Chinese Android-based smartwatch), in specs (the thinner smartphones or the ones with giant batteries) or in price (i.e sub-$80 smartphones with 5" HD screens).

Just looking for feedback, so let me know what you think.

It's a tech forum, you shouldn't ask about it (IMO), I would love to get tech/gadget information, doesn't matter where it comes from.

Hi,

On some level we should be promoting local goods to prevent cities like Detroit becoming a repeat incident but since most tech is built in Asia. I am ready to see the future ;)

China would be a lot more interesting if they were more friendly to the outside world, or heck, even their own citizens, and if most weren't rip-off products.

I think it would be a good thing to have reviews on here.  I have looked at some products in the past (Ainol tablets etc), but have not bought as I haven't found reviews on sites that I know.

Chinese tech is top notch but mainly its built for their market because its enormous compared with the rest of the available world. The two main issues I see is the lack of feedback support i.e. regularly poorly written application code and the dreadful Chinglish manuals and both with a little work, could be so much better.

One other issue is theres so much poor cloning going on that getting a reliable well made device is sometimes down to pot luck.As an example the relatively cheap Baofeng UV5R a PMR446 and 2 meter radio , has so many clones being sold its hard to get a properly working device thats actually programmable even the PC cable to program it has been copied to death with poor results.

Neowin should just write up all the tech trends.  Ignoring a certain market sector just because of our distaste towards them/it is not very wise idea.  I do understand America(n) have a certain dislike that is from China but the reader sure wants to be informed of the real world and not live in a cloaked universe.

I think the coverage would be nice. Some of the nokia phones that came out in india that didnt exist in the USA were pretty ######ing awesome. This was years ago but i do try to keep up with technology in other parts of the world. Having it on neowin will be very helpful

I love products from China (especially cheap tech from ebay) - endless source of amusement and sometimes the things actually work!

I try to buy one cheap thing a month purely for entertainment purposes.

My wins so far have been:

  1. HDMI switcher (3 port) for <?3.00ea (and it actually works)
  2. Sony Z1 magnetic dock for < ?3.00ea (Bought 3, all working)
  3. 3 Port LDNIO USB hub for ?1.25 (Bought 3, all working)
  4. Cheap laser pointer 99p (turns out, has a ridiculous range and about the same as some of the ?40 ones)

My recent consolation prizes:

  1. Knock off USB 7" fan (made from recycled plastic and the blades fell off! One fan only had 2 blades, same box) for ?1.98ea
  2. Bluetooth 3.0 mouse - ?4.99 (has a 1 metre MAX range)
  3. Mouse mat with gel wrist rest 25p (mat is made from cloth with a sewn on rest)
  4. Some Cat6E 0.25M cables for 75p ea (yes I am aware of 6E not being a standard, they weren't! Insulation made of paper and bare wiring inside, not even twisted pair!)
  5. Cheap laser pointer 98p (actually a white "LED" and very different than my winning purchase)

I don't really have an opinion either way.  They have some interesting products, as do the Japanese, but it's rather awkward getting them here and at that point you might as well just buy the usual brands.

I'd certainly read about it, though.

Bit hypocritical seeing as merica, but I would love to try out those Xiaomi android phones. Just so afraid of putting any of my data on them. Hardware wise though they look amazing.

First thing I always hear from people here, when they mention Chinese stuff, is that they will have some form of spyware stuff build in from the Chinese government

Not sure if there is any merit to those claims

I pretty much feel that China does not like to play ball with similar work laws like other countries. Wish the US and other government would do a special China tax of any good made in China to offset the bad practice China does with their workers and pollution they output in that country. Will force companies to rethink how they get there labors.

What do you exactly mean by that?

Yes I know that but putting an extra tax on China made goods will force America companies to somewhere else. I know its a pipe dream but China should at least try to play far with their trade agreement which they never did when Bill Clinton pass the law in late 1990s.
