Fibre Broadband Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I'm looking for some advice about upgrading my broadband from standard ADSL to fibre as my exchange has just been upgraded with fibre to cabinet.

Some background about my situation:

I am on a very long line (I believe in the region of 6km). I am currently in contract with TalkTalk on their basic unlimited package which is amazing value at only ?3.50 per month (plus line rental). I get a 2MB connection because this is all the line is capable of. I don't think I have much longer left on my TalkTalk contract so it's possible to switch.

I have done availability checks with the following results:

  • BT "Unlimited Faster Broadband"
    • Approx ?23 per month (plus line rental)
    • 18 month contract
    • Estimated speed says between 14-20mb
  • Sky "Fibre Unlimited"
    • ?20 per month
    • 18 month contract
    • Estimated speed says between 13.5-19.7mb
  • TalkTalk "Fibre Medium"
    • Extra ?10 per month on top of my existing costs (so ?13.50 per month)
    • 18 month contract (I believe)
    • Estimated speed says only 7mb!

Obviously TalkTalk seems like the best option for me as I can upgrade instantly rather than waiting for my contract to end and it's the cheapest option. My only concern is that they are estimating a much lower speed. Is the estimated speed mostly governed by the line like "normal" ADSL? If so I will go with TalkTalk as they will be the same as BT and Sky regardless of who is correct (those estimating 7mb or 14mb).

Or is it somehow possible that BT/Sky can magically provide 14-20mb where TalkTalk can only reach 7mb?

Thanks a lot :-)

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

I couldn't check my phone line as it's a TalkTalk line (not BT). But I checked my Post Code and these are the results ... I can't see any mention of FTC.

I checked PlusNet and they estimated 13mb. I'm hopeful the speed will be in that region and TalkTalk are just being pessimistic!

According to that you cannot get fibre at your cabinet, use the phone number check to get a more accurate result.

You should see FTTC above the WBC ADSL 2+ if fibre was available.
