Xbox One Install Times. Seriously, What The Hell?

Recommended Posts

I just seriously cannot fathom what the hell is going on with the install times on the XBox One.

They truly dumbfound me.

Got home from work, starting installing COD Advance Warfare.

Turns out I wasted over 45 minutes and nothing installed, as there is some bug if you let it download and install the update before the game installs, it just gets stuck in a loop saying queued and nothing installs.

Okay, no big deal. Start over and start installing at around 5:45 PM.

It is now 8:15 PM, 2 hours and 30 minutes later, and the game is still at 44%.

Because the game said ready to play, that is just what I did around 30 minutes ago.

I was able to play the first mission in the SP Campaign and that was it.

When I went to play the second mission, it gave me a message "Content Loading", so I could not play the second mission.

Decided okay, will check out the MP.

Nope. Content Loading.

Seriously what is going on here?

Does anyone have any insight at all why it takes so, so, so damn long to install a game on the XBox One?

It says the game is 48 GB, but seriously even 10 years ago on a PC, even if a game was a multi disk install, it maybe took 45 minutes total, and that was pushing it. It was usually more like 15-30 minutes.

Just checked. Moved 1% as I typed this. That is something I suppose.

I don't know what the day one patch is like for Advanced Warfare but quite a few of them have been very large.

You get the patch when you install the game, so it can take a while.

As for console glitches I fixed mine by turning Instant On to Energy Saving mode and shutting it down.  Seems like something with the account security stalled o.o

Must be glitch/hiccup in your console..

I have no problems with installations on mine.

Try to factory reset and intall them again and see how the installation time goes.

I have had this issue since Day 1 out of the box. It only seems to have gotten worse. I remember Forza 5 took nearly 2 hours to install. That was the first game I ever installed. So I have had an issue since opening the box you are saying?

Update was only 286 MB. I grabbed that in a matter of seconds. I will try that last tip and see if that helps. I do not really feel like doing a factory reset especially since I have never seen fast install times.

EDIT - Okay I do think something is seriously wrong with my drive or something.  I paused the main install and tried to install the Day Zero Advanced Arsenal Pack.

It is 8.8 MB in size.

It took over 3 minutes to install 8.8 MB.

What is the deal with save files if I do a factory reset? Are they in the cloud somewhere or do I have to manually back them up?

I think I do need to call MS though. As I said install times have been atrocious for me since Day 1. This is just way longer than the 2 hours they usually take.

I found the fix. Apparently it was because I was connected to XBox Live.

So I unplugged my ethernet cable, cancelled the install completely, powered down my console, restarted, put in the disk, chose Install Disk, and I am already at 10%.

Why on earth being connected to XBox Live would make a game install slow down to a crawl is truly beyond me.

If it somehow has to do with DRM, that is awful. Truly and sincerely awful.

Factory reset won't touch your data... only OS and apps.

After reset, your data will be restored and you are back online and play where you left off.

So do you think I should do that based on the fact it appears my install time was so slow because I was connected to Live?

IIRC Sunset Overdrive installed normally, so I am wondering if this is somehow tied to the larger issue with COD and Live itself.

It just is crazy to me it was because I was online connected to Live. That really does not make much sense.

With that said, it is not what I would describe as fast right now either.

I just checked and I am at 57%, and it has been 20 minutes.

Does that line up with your install times? About 30 minutes total?

If not, I think I need to do the factory reset. Will probably wait until the weekend though.

It was downloading the latest updates for the game while installing. Next time if you want to have a faster install time disconnect from live during the install then reconnect when done to download the patch. It seems to be faster to do it that way. It was mentioned a few days ago that they are working on reducing the install times.

Installation times have been done in 30 minutes or less depends the file size... I have not been over hours like you mentioned.

I was not online for installation for DVD based games...

I was online for digital based games (means downloadable games from the online store on Xbox or Xbox.com)... and these installations have been done in shortly time manner like my DVD installations.

It might be your console...   maybe HDD may be bad or something.

It was not that, I cancelled the update actually as when it was doing what you said it was 100 times worse, it was just stuck in an infinite loop of queuing and installing, queuing then installing...

Turns out I wasted over 45 minutes and nothing installed, as there is some bug if you let it download and install the update before the game installs, it just gets stuck in a loop saying queued and nothing installs.

So the update had zero to do with it as I canceled it completely, restarted, then just tried to install outright.

It was because I was connected to Live for some reason. You can see I linked to a support page from MS directly, so this is apparently a known issue.

As someone else pointed out, when you go to uninstall any game (by hitting the menu button on its tile and selecting 'manage'), you will see the game install files and save data are in two sections, so removing the install data does not affect game saves. You could also actually shut the console completely down (by pulling the plug or going into power settings and switch it to 'energy saver' and then hitting the power button. You can then change the power setting back)

As to install times, well MS is apparently working to improve that, but I will share my install times for COD.

Call Of Duty required about 30 minutes including the patch. I never ran into your issue though. When I put in the disc, I was online and it prompted me to download the patch, which it completed first (I noticed that because COD was showing as 'downloading' in the queue list before switching to 'installing')

I do look forward to MS improving those times, but it probably isn't easy to pull off considering the slow media and amount of data that needs to be moved. Keep in mind that blu-ray discs don't move data quite as fast as DVDs to begin with. Then you have the speed of the hard drive, which is not 7200rpm. In the pc world, plenty of large games still can take 30 minutes or more. WoW is one example.

DirtyLarry - I think "installing" actually means "downloading and installing".  Given that, when connected to Live I'm assuming it'll download the patched/updated files instead of copying over what's on disc.  When you disconnect, it just reads off disc.  Combine that with the launch day of a top selling game and I'm guessing the CDNs are just being hammered.

Yup, notorious design flaw since launch. XBL will try to download and apply any day one patches / preloads to games before the content from the disc is installed.

We talked about it back in April too: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1209249-xbox-one-game-installing-question/

The thing that drives me CRAZY though is I manually chose not to install the update, so why is it still trying to install it if I chose not to install it you know?

And the very first issue I experience has been documented by Engadget.

Keep in mind this is prior to the issue of the game taking 2 hours and 30 minutes to only install 48%, this is the first 45 minutes wasted as I had no clue it was happening. Just was stuck in a loop of queue and install.

Go to the settings and then go to network

Turn off wireless. If you are connected via Ethernet, then unplug Ethernet cable behind the Xbox console.

Try to install the game without online updates. See if it improves the installation time.

Once done, get online, you will update the online updates for the game(s).

If it still in same problem as you mentioned earlier, then you probably have either bad console or conflict/bug in OS.

Microsoft is a software company.  Couldn't they just write a script for this issue?

When you pop in a disc, or even buy it digitally, there should be a pop up that says "There is a patch needed for this game, would you like to install it now, or after the main download/install is complete?"

Or something to that degree.

Larry, are you on the preview program by any chance?

I say this because there's a reported issue with the Advanced Warfare install on the preview program build that was fixed in a bug release today.

I have had issues with slow downloads on both the Xbox 360 and the PS4. The PS4 was worse though. However, what i did to resolve it was to go to the network settings and manually setup the DNS. I tired the Google DNS and got better speeds than on my verizon defaults. But when I switched to OpenDNS servers, the speed difference was incredible. So maybe try that and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks. As I said on Page 1 I already did that on. It is installed. It worked. These exact steps worked. We are just discussing it now.

I am, and I saw that is was known too, I linked to an Engadget article on the previous page.

Just to clarify everyone, I appreciate the help, but I now have it installed and have had it installed since about 3 hours after I posted this. We are just having a discussion about the whole process now.

Again I appreciate the help, but it was taken care of. I had to completely disconnect from Live.

Also as an FYI, all of my consoles have a static IP and use Open DNS.

This had nothing to do with the speed of my connection. Or the update itself as I cancelled it.

It is a bug in the One itself.

... in that case, yeah i agree it needs some work. It feels to me like they haven't fine tuned the install system, instead they stuck in the ability to play when the game hasn't finished installing yet and assumed everyone would do that.

It's not bothering me so much though as i have chosen to go all digital this gen and my internet is pretty bad so i just set things to download overnight.

Yeah I noticed this install nonsense last year when I got my Xbone. Ryse took forever to install, and it was extremely frustrating. I probably remember it being worse that it really is, because I got my PS4 around the same time. The installs on the PS4 are super quick, comparatively speaking., Like the One, it does do background-installing after the initial install, but it's much less noticeable on the PS4.

Microsoft has been really good with updates so far, so hopefully they can update the firmware to make the install more efficient. Though, if it's a hardware thing, I wonder how much they can actually improve it.

Yeah, it takes unbelievably long to install games on mine as well.

I no doubt remember complaining about this when the One was first released, but I could not find the posts I did, but I definitely did. In particular I remember Ryse of Forza 5 both taking an incredibly long time. I even posted about how I installed 4 games on the PS4 before one of those games was even at 50%. It is such a drastic difference between the two consoles, and I remember I said it was quite the role reversal, as the opposite was true on the 360 vs the PS3.

With that said this was something else entirely. After 2 hours and 30 minutes the install was still on 48%. And moving about 1% every 5-10 minutes. This, as I said, is no doubt a bug I experienced, which somehow has to do with the One communicating with Live.

Once I unplugged my ethernet cord and did a power cycle, it took 35 minutes to install. The update then took about 3 minutes once I was back online. So something was for sure wrong. My money is something to do with the Preview Program. Worse decision I ever made was joining it.
