Anyone else find Xbox One's interface a bit unwieldy?

Recommended Posts

To preface, I own both a PS4, and XboxOne, and enjoy both of them.

Does anyone think the X1 interface is a bit unwieldy / really cluttered?

I seems the X1 was designed for voice commands w/ kinnect. I made head way with pinning most frequent apps to the left.

I can see the Windows Phone, Windows 8 style influence design.

I wish they anchor / make permanent some core / specific "apps" like settings in fixed locations.

One change I wish MS would undo - and this happened during the 360, is on the game selection screen, restore a link to the store's specific DLC for said game.

It used to be, but now it's really easy to use with just the controller.

Just pin the stuff you use regularly and it's pretty straightforward.

Also, the easiest way to get to settings is to press the = button and choose settings.

As I have Kinect and use "Xbox go to <app/game>" I can't say I've had any issues. However I can see why it would be a touch irritating to do it manually

Exactly this ^

I guess remember that the all Xbox consoles were meant to be sold with a Kinect and so navigating with the Kinect would have been something that everyone used. With that changing, MS is releasing updates to make it easier to navigate without Kinect.

Yep, it's terrible imho

UI aside, I find the OS very buggy.  It took me four attempts (best part of an hour) to get the digital tuner to work at the weekend.  Crash after crash after crash.

Had to literally pull the power cable out twice.  Finally managed to get it working in the end, did nothing different, it just started working after the fourth attempt.

I read online that I can sling tv using the mobile app.  Nope, once I manage to get the app to connect without crashing, theres nothing about watching tv

I also find a lot of things hidden, like when it says theres an update pending, go to your games and apps to see it.   When I go to games and apps, there's nothing about any updates which need doing!

Takes a small bit of getting used to but I have no complaints.

glen8 - turning the Instant On setting to Energy Saving and just turning the console off normally is a better method than unplugging.

Make sure you're not using a lame cable. I had trouble too, but then I replaced the HDMI cable and it worked flawlessly ever since.

At first I did most things via voice but I do alot with the controller now, It's certainly better than it used to be.

It's not as nice the the 360 used to be but then again, that evolved massively over the years so I'm putting too much thought into it right now.

Like others have stated, I use Kinect to get to everything.  And I very much enjoy it as well.

I'm even cleaning up the naming convention of my movies, so when I do some DLNA streaming, I can just say part of the movie name, and Kinect can pick up on it.

But the UI overall has improved in speed and fluidity big time in this year.

I don't navigate with the controller much, preferring to use Kinect, however when i do, and when the missus does, we don't have any issues. It's all about pinning what you want.

Still not a fan of how the friend invite system works...I prefer the X360 pop-up rather than jumping in and out of the game.

My friends list always snaps to the side. Game stays running always.

It's the best UI on console I have used to date.

I have a Kinectless X1 and I quite like the UI, don't find it cluttered at all. However, I still prefer the current X360 dash but I think is more down to being a lot more familiar with it than it actually been better

You don't use the snap friends to invite? It's no different than 360, if not better since ur game isn't blocked. Going into the friends app is the old but still possible way.

Yeah I am not the biggest fan either. I actually love the visual look and feel of it, but navigation leaves a decent amount to be desired. A lot of the time I get to play is late at night, usually while my wife has fallen asleep on the couch. Very early on I still tried using Kinect voice commands while she was sleeping on the couch only to be greeted by the evil eye from her. So while Kinect voice commands may work, they are not always an option, at least if I want to stay happily married.

Considering how good the 360 UI was over the many iterations, the X1 feels like a complete mess IMO.

The navigation on store was utterly atrocious until the most recent update. It's still pretty poor for browsing, but at least they've done away with the redundant listing.

Segragating the features is my biggest peeve though. Nothing is coherent anymore and involves way more steps than necessary to complete simple tasks.

Can't wait for the major overhauls to start.

Larry if you wake her up saying "Xbox, take a screenshot", just get her to say "Larry, shut the ###### up"

What do you mean exactly by segregated features and coherency?

Also, the major overhaul begins with the update to Windows 10 next year.

How they have cut and chopped up features into Snaps and made everything that was great about the Guide an absolute nightmare to navigate on X1.

This is my biggest annoyance too. I loved the guide on my 360 and not a big fan of snapping, we'll see what they come up with.

I could see some sort of mini guide returning, but at the same time, even the guide had its limitations, namely leaving a game to do most things beyond basic tasks.

I want to see them just improve the speed of the current dashboard and add customization that would allow us to decide what shows up on the main dash. Instead of the current 4 options, we would mix and match what we want there.

I actually like the snap feature, but I know I'm in the minority there, so I'm sure that will change too based on feedback. I know using snapped apps is already much easier now than when it launched. I really hope they keep the snap feature and just improve it, maybe add more multitasking abilities for those that don't want to snap anything, such as background audio, etc.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Win 10 upgrade is a very substantial jump from the current feature set.

I'd really like to be able to play or stream music without having an app open, that's pretty much my only complaint right now.  I don't know if you can with Media Player but I was hoping you could with Xbox Music :/
