LGBT should be an option in the Gender drop down

Hello Neowin, I am a biological female that just realized that for the past year or so, I am bisexual, which means I'm part of the LGBT community. Then I went to my settings to change my gender, but I only found "Male" "Female" and "Not Telling". Then I wondered why the LGBT genders are not an option.

I suggest that we should have LGBT options in the gender drop down, or make it just a field so we can type in anything there.

LBGT isn't a gender, it's a sexual orientation. That said, there are more genders than simply Male and Female. I'll have a look into whether this is something we can easily change, hopefully it will be.

Not everybody identifies as male or female but LGBT does not refer to a gender identity - it's a catch all for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Only the last of those is about gender identity - the other three are sexual orientation. So really it would be about a field for entering sexual orientation and giving people the option to specify in gender if they wish.

Your sexual orientation doesn't change Your gender. And even if You do it it'll just be the opposite gender. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

I hate this century.  Sorry, if you have a penis you are male, if you have a vagina you are female.  Only in the 2000s would these facts of nature even be up for debate.  Sure, you can mutilate yourself, take chemicals, act out as something else - and I'm not denying anyone that - but come on...

Maybe an "Other" or "Hermaphrodite" option. Or to be fair, just remove the box all together, not really needed.

 

If i were you i'd click "Not telling" or actually choose the gender you identify with. But don't forget. LGBT isn't whether your Male or Female. So putting that as an option in the gender box, is frankly daft.

But seriously, the sensible options are either just not displaying at all (is there really any need to display gender on a field?), or, have free-form text so people can write whatever they feel appropriate.

Have it default to "None of your damn business" and Display:hidden the field :p

As far as physical I agree, but that's basically telling people what they feel they are doesn't matter.  I may not care enough to understand transgender people (despite having friends among them) but I definitely understand not wanting to be/associating with what other people think you are.

As far I know, the only genuine additional gender options, from a biological standpoint, would be "male-neutered" and "female-spayed" like with pets. And that's if you get a vasectomy or a tubal ligation.

 

Well, apart from the people who had a sex change, I guess. But in most cases wouldn't they be presenting themselves as their post-change gender anyway? Wouldn't the end result be intended to be effectively male or female? But there would certainly be no harm in giving them the option if they wanted it.

Get a custom made T-Shirt and where it everyday, see if you still feel the need.

The 'biological' side is a person's sex, the psychological side is a person's gender. The two don't always align.

Gender has nothing to do with sexual orientation.  You could be a male or female that likes bestiality or forestiality (putting your privates on or in trees) or automobiality (putting your private parts in or on automobile parts).  None of these are gender related.  What you do in your spare time is no ones business, if you are male or female...usually that is pretty public.

Neutering removes testicles.

 

Vasectomy snips/ties a tube.

 

Its a bit different ;)
