Network equip recommendation old house thick walls - home plug

Recommended Posts

I'm moving into a new house and I want to get the networking right. Don't want to waste money on hardware I don't need but also have no desire for any "junk" hardware. Looking for a smart setup with good bang for your buck.

Buying an arris tm722g and avoiding the badly reviewed Comcast gateways.

Assuming the modem won't be in a good place to have my wireless base station, I was planning to use a power line networking kit to get an Ethernet appearance In a central place - say near the tv http://m.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-powerline-networking-kit/

Having also seen this switch http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16833181170 i'm wondering if I should use that to hardwire some things... Or just throw a wifi router on the other end of the powerline adapter and blanket the place..

Better streaming with an Ethernet cable going to the tv or roku or whatever? Leave wifi for the iPad and laptop and phones?

Switch vs router vs hub right after the arris modem and before going out over the powerline networking? Or maybe that home plug switch http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16833181170 is what I should use - and then later on another wireless router or wireless bridge / access point?

Topology and hardware recommendations appreciated. There are lots of ways to do this and I want to set it up so that my home network gives me the best Comcast xfinity can give for both streaming content to my tv and browsing with phone and laptops

My advice is if it can take a wire and it won't move then wire it.

If it moves, or can't take a wire, then go wireless.

I have the Devolo kit running throughout my house.  It works well.

Just so you know those newegg links are not working correctly, looks like you linked to mobile version, and don't get the item if you don't go with mobile browser it seems. Here is link to full page version of that item number

But both of your links one is suppose to be switch points to same item number?
