? Mozilla Firefox 1.0 was released.

Its development started two years prior. The idea was to have a lightweight alternative to the old Mozilla Suite (now known as SeaMonkey). During this time it underwent two name changes: At first the project was called 'Phoenix', then 'Firebird' before adopting the Mozilla Firefox name early in 2004.

As a reminder, this is what Firefox 1.0 looked like:

Since then it underwent a lot of changes both in terms of UI and functionality.

The strength of Firefox back in 2004 as well as now? Extensions. To this day Firefox is the most customisable browser out there. Mind you, they were even more important in the beginning because well.. Firefox 1.x didn't exactly have a lot of features built in besides bare web browsing.

Here's to the next 10 years. Happy Birthday, Firefox!

Which at the time, when everything and the kitchen sink was being added to Mozilla, was a breath of fresh air!

But everybody needs a mail client, news client, irc client, html editor, an hotdog machine, bread machine, can opener, deep frier and popcorn machine conveniently crammed in a single app. Wait, it also browsed the web?

i loved v1 so much. At that time IE was one of the worst browsers out there; it was slow, buggy and MS took years to bring out basic features. Firefox saw a gap in the market and build its extension system around fixing those issues. Well done to the mozilla team, showing what a small company can do.

Agreed. You have to remember what the browser market was like when Firefox 1.0 was released: IE 6 was dominating the market, as crap as it was; there were the Mozilla Suite and its derivative Netscape 6.x/7.x, examples of bloatware; Opera was still adware. Chrome didn't exist yet, Safari was OS X exclusive.

Firefox was a breath of fresh air and helped to further innovation in the browser market.

I still respect Firefox for their history, but back then after a bit Opera was a contender and stole their thunder for me.

Now I'm back on IE (though Chrome is also worthwhile.) o.o

Then your browsing experience would be VERY limited.

Like using IE isn't already limiting? forced to use it at work, everyone hates it with a passion, can't get an exception to use Chrome or FF for now

Try using Firefox 1.0 and tell us how it works out.  It doesn't.  Not a big fan of IE either but at least it's up to date with the current web and is actually usable... well aside from looking at old GeoCities sites on the Internet Archive anyway.  Just for example, Neowin's front page:

Yup, I remember the winstripe theme. Firefox has change quite a bit since then and I hope that it keeps going :)

Please go use a modern version of IE that renders pretty much as it should, in a quick and fuss-free manner.  I do, daily.

Hands down my favorite version of the browser. I started using it exclusively when it was called Phoenix, and my mind was a little blown when they added the icons for the UI in Firefox 0.8 I believe. I thought they were so...modern...at the time. Once version two dropped, I felt Firefox started loosing its lightweight feel, and when I upgraded to version 3, it was so error prone, I started looking for alternatives.
