The laptop cannot see the wireless networks

^ Praetor - with you!!  Still getting nothing to work with - he has stated nothing in this last email of use either other than 2 and 3 are completely in conflict with each other..  If his router and laptop work together at his house, then I have to say BS that it doesn't work at his house..  I mean come on - does his house have ghosts? ;)

It's a possible scenario, although i don't think that would interfere with the Wifi radios :)

nevertheless, it's also possible that the OPs friend is connecting to another wifi network when in home and in the tests with the OP he connected into his router. Honestly, there is too much conflicts "facts" that the OP has said to accurately troubleshoot this.  :/

Really need to see netsh wlan show all

From when at OP house and doesn't work, and when it is at his house and does work.. Or his machine at his friends house that does work, etc..

To start with be happy with just netsh wlan show all from the problem machine at the problem house.. That would be a start!!

What 11a/b/g/n standards does his WiFi support? Maybe his router(s) are in greenfield mode and won't allow 11a/b/g to connect.

Just a thought.

OP, did you even try this? I mean, you went for all that trouble but this is a easy step...

this is something that i haven't tested it yet. my friend is not advance user. the router is a/b/g (Linksys WRT54GL). I will try the commands and if it not worked i will make a format to the computer. thanks

While we have asked for that info multiple times, have not gotten any sort of details on client or router settings yet.  While I agree something like that could be going on - doesn't explain 2 and 3 in his troubleshooting statements.  If router was set for N only for example, and his client was only G -- then it wouldn't work at his house either..

Unless his ssid is say the default linksys, and his buddies house was using the same ssid..  And they say hey I see it now ;)  And never bother to actually connect to verify correct profile - or maybe the networks are both just OPEN without any security, etc.  Again we don't know since no actual useful info has been given - just conflicting statements like 2 and 3.

edit:

"format to the computer. thanks"

What???

So his router is wrt54gl - is it running native firmware or 3rd party.  So we know it has to be 2.4 only, and no N or A that is for sure...  Is the SSID unique or just the default.  Is it set for G only, or B is allowed, etc..  That you would format his computer because he has such an issue is just plain NUTS!!!

Before you go deleting any profiles - how about simple posting of netsh wlan show all

The router is running with tomato firmware and yes has a unique SSID. Also the wifi has password. The ISP router has a different name which more or less has the same sspecificationsas the wrt54gl, wifi a/b/g. I will try to make netsh wlan to show you what results has returned.

As for the statement 2, I used his router at my house without changing the configuration of the router just to check if the router's wifi network was visible on his computer, and it was.

About the third statement, as i said my friend has used some other devices to check his wifi network, having the wrt54gl connected on the ISP router and also without the wrt54gl to be connected on the ISP router. When the wrt54gl was connected on the ISP was visible on the devices that he tried but also he was able to connect on the router (the computer that he used was the same model with his laptop). Then he removed the wrt54gl and left only the ISP router. Again using the same laptop that he used with the wrt54gl the laptop, the wifi was visible on the laptop and also he made a successful connection with the router.

I will paste later the configuration of the ISP router if you want it

lol format is NOT need, at this point.

Is the router MAC blocking the device perhaps?

According to OP, the laptop and the router in OP's house works, so no.

The netsh wlan show all command would be a start.

Ok, I withdrew my post earlier, but I'm finding hard not to ask...

At the risk of asking a silly question... Are you sure, or is there any way to test to make sure your friend's equipment isn't in some sort of radio dead spot??

OP: something isn't right. You said that your friend could connect to his wifi at your house, so it should had THAT profile (at the very least). From the netsh wlan show profiles dump it shows that there isn't a single profile in there, meaning that it never connected into a wifi network, ever.

you could create a new profile manually (it shouldn't be need it, since the router is broadcasting the signal) either with the netsh wlan command or via GUI, but like Aheer.R.S. said, make sure that laptop is close enough to the wifi router.

forget that, i missed the wifi profile (it's in there lol). Is GIWRGOS the name of your friends wifi network? is so then just delete that profile using the command i posted above and try to see if you can connect now.

That is not

netsh wlan show all

How freaking hard is it??

as to your popup -- that is what it shows when the freaking radio is OFF..  Is the laptop in a faraday cage when your trying to use it?  So when your laptop is in same spot as your friends - do you see other networks?  You know placing the laptop on top of the microwave while your making popcorn is not the best place for your laptop ;)

Move around the house - no networks show up??

Again -- lets see netsh wlan show all

pipe it to a text file if you want

netsh wlan show all >c:\temp\showall.txt

Then post that text file..

it shows a profile, maybe the OP's friend changed the password or the settings of the wifi, therefore that profile is invalid. but yeah, a netsh wlan show all does help as well.

My frustration is how many times did we ask!!

It would tell us if the freaking radio was off ;)  It would show if there is any networks in the area, etc.  Would show us exactly what card working with, etc. etc..

Did you check to make sure he doesn't have it set to disable his wifi when wire plugged in - is he trying to run both wired and wireless at the same time?  What is the specific laptop - so can validate that the radio is actually on.  Many of them have a button, or key stroke to hit that turns radio on or off, etc.

Sorry but can't help if user is non willing to supply info asked for - where is the other info.  What is the laptop, did you validate that the radio is just not off? What is the router settings, what band, So your box in the same area of his house sees multiple networks?  On different bands 2.4, 5 - g, n, etc.. ?

So clearly his wifi works - it connected to yours.  But we don't know if yours is B, G, N ?  From the output I would say his wifi card is only 2.4 since no a is shown.  So clearly we know the nic is not disabled or it wouldn't show up - but is radio on?  If we knew the laptop make and model we could look in the manual for how it shows if radio is on - some have blue light, etc..  Where the switch is to toggle radio, etc.

I would guess that radio is off, or just in a dead zone.
