Chinese man buys 99 iPhones for proposal only to get rejected

Recommended Posts

A public proposal involving 99 iPhones didn't go as planned in China Tuesday.

A young man in Guagzhou province spent around $85,000 ? the equivalent of two years salary in the country ? in iPhone 6s, arranged them into a heart shape around his girlfriend outside their workplace, and proposed to her.

In front of his friends and photos, she said no.

The heartbreaking moment went viral on Weibo, the Chinese social media site, the International Business Times reported.

The proposal came on Singles Day, Nov. 11 ? or 11/11, representing four single people.

The day is gaining popularity in China, and is now considered among the biggest shopping days in the world.

The country's online retail giant Alibaba said Tuesday it had pulled in $9.3 billion in sales from its annual shopping event.

I don't pretend to be any kind of Casanova, but that wasn't going to work...

What was the relevance of the iPhones in their relationship? Or did he just do it because he thought, "I need 99 pricey objects to try this"? And what about the ring? If he spent that much money on the phone display, the ring had better have been huge.

That's got to be one of the crazier wastes of coin I've seen in a while.  Can't say I blame her.  One is a nice gift.  99 is f'ing nuts.

He got 99 iPhones but gettin? hitched ain?t done.

With ?Singles? Day? looming in China (Nov. 11), one man thought the time was right to try to tie the knot with his girlfriend, preventing them both from having to participate in any future 11/11 festivities.

As a keystone of the young programmer?s marriage proposal were 99 iPhones 6?s placed on the ground and arranged in the form of a heart. The setup, as reported by The Nanfang, cost the love-bitten chap two years? salary (about $82,000).

But that evidently wasn?t enough. She said no. Siri, how do you mend a broken heart?

Whether our once-hopeful groom likes it or not, pictures of the ultimately sad event (seen above) are up on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo.

But of course, with a bushel of iPhones that size, we?re not convinced he has any real reason to feel too bummed. According to a recent survey, one in five men would actually rather have an iPhone 6 than a girlfriend. And that number is even up from last year?s survey about the iPhone 5s, where one in eight said they would forgo the soft touch of a woman for a new Touch ID-equipped Apple phone.

So, whether our crestfallen man ends up hawking these phones one by one to make back big bucks, or just decides that 99 Siris are better than one real wife, we get the sense that he?ll be OK in the end. Remember, it?s better to have loved and lost 99 iPhones than never to have loved at all.

Are you saying Chinese women are greedy?

No.

I mean people are just too materialistic so they can't find anything but money or luxury goods to express their sincerity.

He clearly didn't want to commit for that 1 more to make it 100. Why would any materialistic chinese girl want to marry him then?

Because 99 in Chinese "??" voices the same as "??", which means everlasting.

If there's any truth to a commercial I saw on TV about banking and international relationships, A rejection like that could be a way of questioning said giver's generosity

(But I don't know for sure)

wait, the average salary in China according to this is 42500 us dollar? I thought they were supposed to be a cheap labor country, that's a lot more than I make :p

The average doesn't pertain to the poorer areas of China where the factories are built and used by overseas companies ;)

Does a burger flipper equal a national average in the US or Western Europe? :P

This guy has dumb written all over him.  How would 99 phones help her ?   If she said yes, what would she do with all those phones ?  It would probably start with giving them away or selling them, so there goes the symbol of their love (according to him)

$85,000 - would have bought a nice 2 1/2 ct ring, and one hell of a Rolex... that would have been more appropriate, but still not the smartest thing.

I guess I simply dont understand the culture.  If iPhones are so coveted over there where it is hard to get one, I guess 99 of anything that is rare and a status symbol would be shocking, but not romantic,
