Sharp Crammed Over 400,000 Pixels On This Insane 4-Inch Display

The digital camera megapixels arms race might be over, but now smartphone display makers have taken up the cause, trying to cram as many pixels as possible into their screens. And Sharp has now claimed superpower status with a 4.1-inch display boasting a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, or 736ppi. For comparison, the iPhone 6 plus has a ppi of just 401.

The display's resolution is a bit shy of the 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 pixels often referred to as 4K, but Sharp claims its new display has the same ppi of a 6-inch, 4K screen. That way, the company can make claims that a mobile device using its new 4.1-inch display provides the same 4K viewing experience as a device with a 6-inch screen, although with pixels just 11.5?m in size, it's not like the naked human eye could actually tell the difference.

 

It's a fun reminder that soon all the time we spend looking down at our phones will feel more like looking out a window. But instead of seeing your neighboring apartment building 20 feet away, you can load up whatever fantastic vista you prefer.

what is the point if your eyes cannot tell the difference?       1080 in 6" is plenty, and considering you cannot see individual pixels,  there better be other benefits too...    except for increased energy consumption.

Pretty sure the eye can tell the difference. I've never seen any pixels while looking at a wall in real life even from really really close. Never experienced any lags either even at really high speed only motion blur.

 

It's a misconception that the eye can't see past 30 fps and a fixed amount of pixels. The eye don't really work this way.

 

Yes past a certain point the gain is minimal but the higher the fps is and the higher the pixels count is the closer you are to what real life is cause real life ain't made of pixels and frames per seconde.

and the battery life will suffer horribly of course...sure it looks amazing though :)

This is IGZO, which is really kind to batteries.

Sharp offered IGZO to Apple for the new iPhone to dramatically increase battery life but Apple didn't want to be tied to one supplier.
