getting my network working properly with vm and remote desktop

There are several tutorials to do this but none seem to work with me. Maybe I don't understand much of network, but should be easy to follow. My host is win 8.1 and I have a vm of win 10 and I'm tryting to do a remote desktop so I can copy files.

 

Can someone provide me with a guide on how to setup the network properly?

What kind of difficulty are you facing?

I hope you created the vm with default settings for network card, just disable firewall of windows10 & enable remote desktop support with proper IP configuration.

I couldn't connect via RDC because "remote computer on network or services not enabled", even though I followed the guide above.

 

I'll go with free virtual pc...

So you have a copy of 10 on hyperV on 8.1..  Can you ping its IP address, what IP address is the VM getting?  This is not at all difficult, but we need to understand where your at in your setup.  Not going to write a complete guide from scratch..

Not sure you would use remote desktop to copy files - why not just normal file and print sharing.. remote desktop is painful way to move files..

Yup, I've set the vm the same way in the guide. 

 

From what I read online, hyper-v doesn't allow copying files, so RDC is an alternative. 

 

I do get an internet connection and an IP in the vm. I'll investigate further and report back.

That seems pretty stupid way to move files - why don't you just setup file sharing if you want to share files??  Who says you would need to share files through the visualization layer.

 

You have 2 windows machines on the same network do you not, one is physical the other is just a VM - but they are still on the same network.  How do you move files between windows machines?  That would be file sharing..  Does not matter if the machines are physical or virtual.

 

Can you ping the vm IP?  If not set its software firewall to allow it - enable file sharing, there you go done!
